The Actual Meaning of The Idol: Sex Slavery in the Music Industry "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Warning: Colossal spoilers ahead!

Despite the fact that the series received a barrage of terrible reviews, I sat down a watched all five episodes of The Idol. My first impression: The show should have been called Lily-Rose Depps Butt in Various Outfits While The Weeknd Gets Increasingly Sweaty and Coked Up.

Not only is this title catchier, it properly reflects what we see for most of the series. Theres indeed a ridiculous amount of close-up shots of Lily-Rose Depps barely covered butt during the series, to the point that it becomes just absurd. The analytical part of me wondered: Is there a comment about the music industry in these shots or is it just director Sam Livingston just being the perv that he is?

Its most likely both. The Idol is about industry slavery as seen by people who actually exploit industry slaves.

Interesting fact: The Idol was originally directed by Amy Seimetz who had already completed about 80% of filming. Judging and perspective. However, she was fired and replaced with Sam Livingston who rewrote and refilmed the entire thing. The result: Lily-Rose Depps Butt in Various Outfits While TheWeeknd Gets Increasingly Sweaty and Coked Up.

Those who hired Sam Livingston knew exactly what they were getting. The director is mostly known for creating Euphoria, a teen drama thats just, like, terrible, for so many reasons. In my article about Euphoria, I wondered why a 37-year-old man would dream up and put on film so many extreme sex scenes involving minors. Some commentators answered that Livingston had no ill motives and that he was simply reflecting youth culture.

However, with the release of The Idol, many finally realized that there was something off with this guy.

Scientists Find That Dolphins Use Baby Talk With Their Calves "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Scientists Find That Dolphins Use Baby Talk With Their Calves

Study Finds That Dolphins Do Baby Talk

Photo: slowmotiongli/Depositphotos

Humans are no strangers to baby talk. Parents will often speak in a higher pitched voice as well as talking slower and simpler to their children to help immerse them in human speech. This is because babies respond to our pitch and visual cues, even if they cannot understand language yet. Apparently, humans are not the only ones who do this either. New research has found that dolphins also change their vocalization when communicating with their young, producing their own kind of baby talk.

To arrive at this conclusion, scientists studied data from wild bottlenose dolphins that was collected over a period of 34 years. Just as humans call each other by their names, every dolphin has a unique whistle. However, when mother dolphins whistled in the vicinity of their calves, researchers found that these calls were at a higher frequency and with a wider range, which is very similar to human baby talk.

This prompted scientists to believe that dolphins alter their vocalization for the same reason humans do: to immerse their young in dolphin communication. Just like humans, dolphins mature and develop slowly, and spend a long time with their caregiver. Since dolphin vocalizations are also extremely complex, it probably takes a significant amount of practice for the calves to learn.

While these findings strongly suggest mother dolphins have some form of child-directed communication, it is not absolutely certain. If it does turn out to be true, however, it suggests even more similarities between humans and dolphins despite having evolved so distantly from one another.

Surging Demand For Bitcoin Ordinals Propels Q2 Trading Volume To $210M "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin Ordinals unique non-fungible token (NFT) inscriptions on the Bitcoin blockchain have recently registered over $210 million in trading volume in the first half of 2023 alone. This new wave of innovation, coupled with the volume recorded so far, demonstrates the potential that lies within the intersection of blockchain technology and digital artistry.

Bitcoin Ordinals Q2 Performance Defies Expectations

In a recent quarterly report from DappRadar, a rise in trading volume was documented for Bitcoin in the second quarter of 2023. The data, characterized by notable fluctuations, attributes this heightened trading activity to an increased interest in Ordinals, suggesting a marked shift in trader preferences and investment strategies.

Bitcoin Ordinals, once an emerging player in the crypto market, has now gained significant traction, establishing itself as a potential innovator in the industry.

The trading volume of Ordinals has demonstrated a growth trajectory, as detailed in DappRadars report. The trading volume for Ordinals started the year modestly, registering a mere $7.18 million in the first quarter. However, as the innovation gained increased visibility and trader confidence, there was an upturn in trading activity.

The second quarter of 2023 saw Bitcoin Ordinals trading volume skyrocket to $210.7 million, a figure that represents a 2,834% increase from the preceding quarter. This upswing in trading activity underscores its growth in the digital asset market and indicates the potential for continued extension in the quarters to come.

It is worth noting that Bitcoin Ordinals performance is not a passing trend; instead, it signals a shift in how investors and enthusiasts approach NFTs in the digital assets space....

New Developer Tools Enable Lightning And AI Communities To Build Cost-Effective LLM Tooling "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Yesterday, Olaoluwa Osuntokun and Michael Levin of Lightning Labs announced the release of a new set of developer tools aimed at empowering the Lightning and AI developer communities to create inclusive and cost-effective Large Language Model (LLM) tooling. These tools leverage the Lightning Network and bitcoin to seamlessly integrate with LLMs. They are built on the L402 protocol, a Lightning native authentication mechanism and Langchain, a library that simplifies working with AI agents by incorporating external data for advanced functionality.

One of the tools included in the release is LangChainBitcoin, which enables Langchain agents to interact directly with Bitcoin and the Lightning Network. It includes features such as LLM Agent Bitcoin Tools, which utilize OpenAI GPT function calls to enable developers to create agents capable of holding a bitcoin balance, sending/receiving bitcoin on Lightning and driving with a LND node. Another tool, the L402 HTTP API Traversal, is a Python wrapper for a LangChain LLM chain (APIChain) that allows agents to access L402 payment-metered APIs seamlessly.

Aperture, a drop-in reverse proxy server, is also part of the release. It implements the L402 protocol and transforms any API into a pay-per-use resource gated via L402 functionality on the Lightning Node Connect protocol, enabling compatibility with various Lightning Nodes, such as Voltage, Umbrel, Start9, Raspiblitz and BTCPayServer.

The L402 protocol, introduced in 2020, is a standard for payment-metered APIs designed to utilize the existing HTTP 402 Payment Required status response code. It combines bitcoin and the Lightning Network to enable global micropayments for paid APIs. The protocol allows for authenticating and charging per use of internet-native services, addressing challenges faced by the AI developer community, such as the high cost of GPU training and limited accessibility to advanced LLM models.

By providing these developer tools, the creators aim to build more accessible AI infrastructure for both humans and AI agents. They are particularly excited about the AI4ALL hackathon, taking place this month, where developers can leverage these tools to unleash their creativity and innovation. The Lightning and AI communities are encouraged to explore the potential of these new tools and contribute to the development of the machine-payable web powered by Lightning.

Bitcoin Short-Term Holders Continue Exchange Inflows, But Price Holds On "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

On-chain data shows that Bitcoin short-term holders have continued to make exchange inflows, but the assets price has held on so far.

Bitcoin Short-Term Holders Make High Deposits For 20 Straight Days

According to data from the on-chain analytics firm Glassnode, the short-term holders have sent 617,000 BTC to exchanges during the past 20 days. The short-term holders (STHs) here refer to Bitcoin investors who have been holding onto their coins since less than 155 days ago.

The STHs are generally the less experienced hands of the market, who may easily sell during periods of widespread FUD in the market, or during sharp surges in the cryptocurrencys price.

Usually, these investors make use of exchanges for participating in such selloffs, so the data for their exchange inflows can provide hints about their current behavior.

The exchange inflow here naturally refers to the total amount of Bitcoin that the STHs are depositing to the wallets of centralized exchanges. When the value of this metric is high, it can be a sign that these holders are selling a large number of coins currently. Naturally, such a trend may have bearish consequences for the assets price.

Now, here is a chart that shows the trend in the Bitcoin exchange inflow for these STHs over the past year or so:

Bitcoin Short-Term Holder Inflows

Here, the Bitcoin STH exchange inflows are represented in terms of the percentage of their supply. As the supply of these investors can change, it makes more sense to consider the percentage of it as it would make comparisons with history easier (the pure figures, on the other hand, may be incompatible).

From the graph, its visible that the Bitcoin STH exchange inflows have been elevated recently. During the last 20 days, these investors inflows have measured above 1% of their supply.

In this period, the cohort has deposited a total of about 617,000 BTC ($18.6 billion at the current exchange rate) to these platforms, which is quite a significant amount.

In the chart, Glassnode has also highlighted the previous instances during the last year or so where the indicator crossed the same threshold of 1%. It looks like in terms of the magnitude of the inflow spikes, the three...

Fireworks: On Kenneth Anger and The Legend of Zelda "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

One of the most provocative sequences of Kenneth Angers career appears in an early short film (and my favorite), Fireworks (1947): a sailor opens his fly to reveal a Roman candle spitting sparks at the camera until it explodes, drenching the frame with spurts of white light. This image would later establish Anger as a seminal figure in the history of queer film, but it also resulted in an obscenity trialgay sexuality was criminalized, and the Hays Code had a vice grip on Hollywood. A countercultural icon and lifelong Angeleno, Anger died in May at age ninety-six. The body of work he left behind stands beside that of American avant-garde filmmakers like Maya Deren, Sara Kathryn Arledge, Stan Brakhage, and Jonas Mekas: experimental shorts, made predominantly between the forties and seventies, that combine surrealism and scenes of stylized violence with a heavy dose of occult symbolism.

Fireworks, which Anger made at twenty in his parents Beverly Hills house while they were out of town, is a gorgeous fourteen-minute film with no dialogue, set to orchestral music. The nameless protagonist, played by Anger himself, leaves his bed, wanders through a homoerotic dreamworld in search of a light, and meets a group of beautiful sailors. They flex their cartoonishly massive biceps for him and light his cigarette with a flaming palm frond but then turn hostile, chasing the dreamer down to deliver a beating. Theres a flurry of white-clothed limbs as they tear his clothes off, whip him with chains, pour milk over his lips and eyes, and gouge open his chest with a shattered beer bottle to expose the face of a compass buried among his internal organs. The dreamers expression passes from ecstasy to agony and back again. A few hallucinatory moments later, the fireworks go off.

At the heart of Angers work is a question about the erotics of masculinity. The biker film Scorpio Rising (1963), for example, is an ambiguous exploration of fascist aesthetics: high-gloss rider jackets, Nazi iconography, an obsession with the perfected physical formand the attendant unspoken racial...

Ethereum Address Creation Spikes, Adoption On The Rise? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

On-chain data shows that the Ethereum network has been observing high address creation recently, a sign that adoption could be going up.

Ethereum Network Growth Has Registered High Values Recently

According to data from the on-chain analytics firm Santiment, ETHs network growth has now hit its highest level in around four months. The network growth here refers to a metric that keeps track of the total amount of new addresses that are being created on the Ethereum blockchain.

When the value of this metric is high, it means that a large amount of new addresses are coming online on the network. New addresses may be considered analogous to new users joining the chain, so this kind of trend can be a sign that the cryptocurrency is observing high adoption at the moment.

On the other hand, low values of the indicator can imply not many new investors are coming to the network as there arent many new ETH addresses being created. Such a trend can be a sign that the asset isnt looking very attractive to the general public currently.

Now, here is a chart that shows the trend in the Ethereum network growth over the last few months:

Ethereum Network Growth

As displayed in the above graph, the Ethereum network growth has been observing a rise recently. This would suggest that addresses are being created at increasingly faster rates right now.

Generally, adoption picks up during periods of high price volatility as the investors usually find such price action exciting, and so, the network growth indicator can register a spike.

Recently, however, the assets price has been mostly moving sideways below the $1,900 level, making it interesting that the indicator has been going up nonetheless. Perhaps the general investors saw the rally that lead up to this period of consolidation and now think that it may pick up again eventually.

During the past week alone, the metric has seen a combined value of 550,800, meaning that 550,800 new addresses have just been created on the Ethereum network in this period.

Usually, adoption can have a constructive effect on the cryptocurrencys price, as it shows increasing interest in the asset, which is generally also acc...

Many of us would like a more organized home. But where do you start? With so many storage solutions and organization systems available, the choices seem endless. If youre feeling overwhelmed by both your clutter and the decision-making process, theres one simple material that will help you in a variety of places: pegboards.

A pegboard is a perforated hardboard that is drilled with evenly spaced holes. The holes can accept hooks or pegs which allows you to hang items or install shelves on them. This makes them an excellent storage solution for keeping your home tidy. Pegboards will enable you to take things off the floor or shelves (vital if you have a small space) and move them to the wall. Because they are displayed on a flat board, things are much easier to find.

Beyond the practical application, pegboards can add a decorative element to your space. They are available in various sizes, shapes, and colors, allowing you to complement the style of your home. And if youre interested in customizing it even more, you could paint it, add stencils, or cover it in wrapping paper and then punch out the holes.

Pegboards are easily adjustable, and you can move and change them depending on your needs. Scroll down for 10 pegboard ideas you can use to spruce up your space.

Pegboards allow you to organize your space in a way that's both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Here are 10 pegboard ideas that will show you the possibilities.

Since then, however, BTC has been trading in the range between $29.800 and $31.300. Neither bulls nor bears have been able to gain the upper hand and break out of the trading range in higher time frames.

The renowned crypto trader and analyst Rekt Capital believes that all it takes is a positive catalyst to current BTC price action. According to him, Bitcoins current sideways trend within a tight range is a mere step away from its ultimate demise. He affirms that a BTC downtrend is only ever one positive catalyst away from ending. And a BTC uptrend is always one negative catalyst from ending, adding:

BTC has performed a bullish Monthly close but is primed for a healthy technical retest at ~$29250. With price currently around $30200 I wonder what negative catalyst will soon emerge to facilitate this technical retest.

On-chain analyst Axel Adler Jr echoes this view and points to BTC total transfer volume as indicator for a massive breakout move. While the exact timing remains elusive, Adler Jr suggests that the moonshot could be triggered by a significant event such as the...

BarnBridge DAO Freezes Operations Amid SEC Probe, Can They Weather The Storm? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

On July 6, Douglas Park, a lawyer representing the BarnBridge decentralized autonomous organization, shared important news with the members via the platforms Discord channel. Park disclosed that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had initiated an investigation into BarnBridge DAO and individuals associated with it.

In an effort to mitigate potential legal liabilities, Park advised that all work on BarnBridge-related products, including the closure of liquidity pools, should cease.

Additionally, he suggested that individuals should not receive compensation for their contributions resulting from the DAOs investment activities.

Shortly after Parks message, co-founder Tyler Ward, also known as Lord Tyler on Discord, confirmed the accuracy of the information on BarnBridges Discord platform.

While the reason behind the SECs probe into BarnBridge DAO was not explicitly explained by Park and Ward, Park clarified that due to the investigation being ongoing and non-public, only limited information could be shared at this time.

Speculations Arise Among DAO Members In Response To Announcement

Following the announcement, a number of BarnBridge DAO members expressed skepticism regarding the SECs investigation. One member on the Discord platform requested substantiating evidence of the SECs involvement and insinuated that BarnBridges founders might be using the investigation as a pretext for orchestrating an exit strategy that could potentially defraud investors.

Tyler Ward, however, dismissed this claim, asserting that it would be the worst thought-out rug attempt in history, implying that such intentions were baseless.

Some members adopted a more light-hearted approach to the news, with one suggesting that it was time to relocate to Europe, humorously implying that DAO members could potentially evade scrutiny from the SEC.

Another member playfully remarked that anyone who had engaged with BarnBridge would face dire consequences, jesting that SEC Chair Gary Gensler would shoot them on live television, alluding to Genslers perceived strict stance on cryptocurrencies.

Compound (COMP) Token Rallies Over 100% After CEO Quits Details "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Robert Leshner, the well-known creator of the DeFi lending platform Compound Finance, has resigned from his position as the CEO of the DeFi lending protocol.

Leshner recently announced his plan to launch Superstate Trust, a new business venture. The creation of a short-term government bond fund is the goal of this endeavor. Notably, Superstate Trust has already raised $4 million in startup money from a variety of DeFi investors.

Compound (COMP), the native token of Compound Finance, is still on the rise despite Leshners resignation. COMP, which is currently trading at $55.87, has experienced a spectacular rise in value of 22.47% over the last two days.

The Defiant Terminal reports that Compound Finance has $2 billion in assets and that its governance token COMP has increased by over 100% in the last week.

Significant digital assets including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and the S&P 500 have all increased by less than 3% during that time period.

This outstanding performance demonstrates Compounds (COMP) robustness and adaptability in the face of organizational changes and reflects increased investor trust in the tokens potential.

Compound supporters believe that recent significant cryptocurrency ownership outflows by important market participants are clear signs that the price of Compound (COMP) will continue to rise.

These backers are optimistic that Compound and its chances for future growth are looking good thanks to the withdrawals made by crypto whales, who own substantial sums of digital assets.

Bullish investors predict Compound may even surpass the remarkable valuation of about $80 in the upcoming weeks as a result. This upbeat attitude is based on the idea that these powerful players withdrawal activities reveal thei...

AITAWeddingGift Man Asks if Hes Wrong for Talking His Family Out of Giving His Sister In Law a Traditional Wedding Gift

Wedding gifts can get tricky.

And they can get even trickier when people getting married are from different cultures.

And this guy wants to know if hes wrong for the stance hes taken about his brothers upcoming wedding.

Read his story below and see what you think.

AITA for talking my family out of giving my future SIL our traditional wedding gift and risk being uninvited?

My family is Asian while my future SIL is white. I dont have a problem with interracial relationships as we have several members of our extended family who married other races. In fact, Im currently in a serious relationship with a woman who is also white.

My GF is wonderful and loves trying new things that my culture has to offer. Some things she loves, other things she likes, and she down right h**es some things. The main point is that she tries them whether its music, food, or traditions. My future SIL is the complete opposite.

She rarely comes to family dinner because she doesnt like the smell of our food. She doesnt join in our celebrations because its so different. For example the lunar new year is a huge celebration for us and she calls it a fake new year we made up just to party.

She and my brother are having their wedding soon and surprise, she didnt want any of our culture in it. It got to the point that my parents almost refused to go. We had to have a huge...

Bitcoin As The Worlds First Over-Unity Power Generator "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

This is an opinion editorial by Kevin Melody, a node runner and real estate professional.

An over-unity power generator (similar to the concept of a perpetual-motion machine) is a hypothetical device that produces more energy than is required to run it. Although there is quite a bit of controversy in this field, the mainstream scientific consensus is that over-unity power generation is impossible, because it defies the first law of thermodynamics.

According to this law, energy can undergo transformations from one form to another, but the total amount of energy within a closed system remains constant. This principle is derived from empirical observations and has been validated through numerous experiments and theoretical frameworks.

In practical terms, this means that energy can neither be created "out of nothing" nor spontaneously disappear. It exists in various forms, such as mechanical, thermal, electrical, chemical and nuclear energy. These forms can be converted into one another, but the total amount of energy remains constant throughout the process.

However, it's important to note that the law of conservation of energy applies to closed or isolated systems where no external energy sources or sinks are involved. In open systems, such as those interacting with their surroundings, energy can be exchanged with the environment, leading to changes in the system's total energy.

For proponents, the trick behind the concept of an over-unity power generator is that it does not, in reality, break the law of conservation of energy. On the surface, it appears to be a closed system (i.e., one that powers itself and keeps itself running as well as producing excess energy). But many of whom believe such an invention is possible do not claim that the device creates energy out of nothing. They claim that, once the device is started, it is able to draw energy from an unproven source and then use that energy to run itself forever as well as provide excess energy to be applied to some other useful purpose.

There have been many devices created that claim to be able to tap this free energy source, but to date, none of these devices has been empirically proven to work. However, there is a persistent notion that many of them do indeed work and that they are deliberately suppressed and withheld from the public.

Are Over-Unity Devices Real?

Conspiracy theories surrounding the suppression of...

Fantom (FTM) Sheds 10% Following Multichain Bridge Withdrawals "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Fantom (FTM) price has been experiencing a dip in the past few days. This fall appears to have worsened in the last 24 hours due to FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) spreading amongst investors.

CoinGecko data shows that the FTM token has lost 10.3% of its value in the last 24 hours. This price plunge has been linked to the movement of crypto assets from Multichains Fantom bridge to separate wallet addresses.

FTM Price Declines Amidst Abnormal Withdrawals From Multichain Bridge

There has been some uncertainty surrounding the Fantom network lately due to the abnormal movement of funds from its Multichain bridge a cross-chain bridging protocol that enables the transfer of assets between different blockchains.

Related Reading: SOL Price Prediction: Solana Smashes Key Resistance, $22 Could Be Next

On July 6, over $100 million worth of crypto assets were withdrawn from Multichains Fantom bridge. On-chain data reveals that 7,214 Wrapped Ether (WETH) tokens (worth $13.6 million), 1,024 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) (equivalent to $31 million), and $58 million worth of US Dollar Coin (USDC) were removed from the networks multichain bridge.

Furthermore, the movement of funds from bridges of other blockchains has also been reported. Notably, Dogechain saw the withdrawal of more than $600,000 in USDC from its bridge. In addition, $4.8 million of USDC and $1 million worth of Tether (USDT) were withdrawn from Multichains Moonriver bridge.

Although Multichain operates on other blockchains, it is understood that the Fantom blockchain is particularly reliant on the cross-chain protocol. According to trading firm Thanefield, nearly 40% of crypto assets on Fantom (excluding its native FTM tokens) made it to the blockchain through Multichains bridges.

The price of FTM has been on a decline since these on-chain activities came under focus. As of this writing, the FTM token trades at $0.269819, losing more than 10% of its value in the past day.

Litecoin (LTC) is generating significant buzz and excitement as its much-anticipated halving event approaches. With the halving just around the corner, whaleslarge investorshave started to make their moves, injecting a sense of urgency and driving increased interest in this crypto asset.

As the countdown to the halving nears its final stages, whales have begun to enter the market, making strategic moves that have caught the attention of many. Their involvement not only reflects their confidence in Litecoin but also serves as a catalyst for renewed interest and excitement among traders and investors.

Will Litecoins halving propel its price to new heights?

Countdown To Litecoin Block Half

At the time of writing, the Litecoin Block Half countdown indicated that the halving event is 26 days away. The halving, a crucial process within the Litecoin blockchain, is poised to have a significant impact on the cryptocurrencys ecosystem.

The concept of halving, also known as halvening, is an essential aspect of cryptocurrencies like Litecoin. It involves a predetermined reduction in the reward given to miners for validating transactions and securing the network. In the case of Litecoin, this reward reduction occurs approximately every four years or after the mining of 840,000 blocks.

By halving the block reward, Litecoin aims to maintain a controlled and limited supply of its tokens over time. This scarcity-oriented approach is based on the belief that as the supply becomes scarcer, the demand and value of Litecoin will increase.

Whale Activity And Price Surge Accompany Litecoins Halving

CoinGeckos latest update reveals that LTC is currently priced at $96.93, reflecting an increase of 14% in the last seven days.

In addition to the price surge, there has been a notable increase in whale activity within the Litecoin ecosystem. Whales, referring to large-scale investors, have made their presenc...

The recently discovered coronal hole is large enough that 20 Earths could disappear inside of it.

Ethereum: Is Lido (LDO) Doomed To Repeat Three Arrows Capitals Fate? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Market research firm Kaiko has published a study on the flagship protocol of Ethereum, Lido Finance (LDO). The study is a must-read for every ETH and LDO investor!

Cautionary tales serve as a valuable reminder of the risks and pitfalls that can await even the most promising projects. Remarkably, Lido Finance has embarked on a massive growth trajectory in recent months, reminiscent of former crypto industry poster child Three Arrows Capital (3AC). Riyad Carey, analyst at Kaiko, writes:

Essentially, 3AC made a bet that GBTC a fundamentally different asset than BTC, with significant frictions in entrance and exit would closely track BTCs price. This saga has been front of mind as Ive observed stETH (and other liquid staking derivatives) begin to displace ETH in DeFi protocols.

Research Findings By Kaiko

The in-depth research conducted by Kaiko offers critical insights into Lidos operations and the potential risks it faces. According to Kaikos analysis, Lidos success story raises concerns about potential vulnerabilities and risks lurking beneath the surface. By examining a wealth of data, Kaiko sheds light on liquidity challenges, leverage risks, and the potential for a large liquidation event.

Lido Finance is a platform that allows users to stake Ethereum and receive stETH tokens, which represent the value of the initial deposit and staking rewards. Kaikos research reveals the impressive growth of stETH tokens over the past year and a half, with the supply increasing fivefold from 1.5 million to 7.5 million, and the number of holders rising from 40,000 to nearly 220,000.

In Arizona Water Ruling, the Hopi Tribe Sees Limits on Its Future "IndyWatch Feed Fertility"

ProPublica is a nonprofit newsroom that investigates abuses of power. Sign up for Dispatches, a newsletter that spotlights wrongdoing around the country, to receive our stories in your inbox every week.

In September 2020, the Hopi Tribes four-decade effort to secure its right to water culminated in a court proceeding. The outcome would determine how much water the arid reservation would receive over the next century and whether that amount would be enough for the tribe to pursue its economic ambitions. Under rules unique to Arizona, the tribe would have to justify how it would use every drop it wanted.

The monthslong ordeal in Arizonas Superior Court unfolded in video calls over shaky internet connections.

Chairman Timothy Nuvangyaoma called it the fight of our lives.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1908 that reservations have an inherent right to water. In the rest of the country, courts grant tribes water based on the amount of arable land on their reservations, relying on a 1963 U.S. Supreme Court precedent. But in 2001, Arizona developed its own method that was ostensibly more flexible to individual tribes visions for how they wanted to use their water by examining their culture, history, economy and projected population.

This new standard offered tribes an opportunity to shape their plans for economic development and growth beyond farming. But the Hopi case, the first adjudicated under this process, showed it also came at a high cost with uncertain outcomes.

Court records show that at the trial, experts brought in by the tribe, state and corporate water users argued over how many Hopi had lived in the area going back centuries and how much water they had used for crops and livestock. They debated the correct fertility rate of Hopi women and the viability of the tribes economic projects. And the court examined lists of sacred springs sites the Hopi traditionally kept secret to preserve them to decide how much water could be drawn from them for future religious ceremonies.

The legal battle, one o...

The Lion of Chaeronea "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

One last Malta-related post to bore you all before I finally move on to other topics:

A favorite pastime of mine when I have the chance to travel is to search out small museums, ones that are off the beaten path and not thronged by tourists at every hour of the day. This has had some wonderful benefitsIll never forget, for example, perusing the wax anatomical models at the Museo La Specola in Florence, or the Arabic decorative tiles at the Leighton House in London. In that tradition, I wanted to let you know that if you ever have the chance to visit Malta, do not miss the Malta Postal Museum.

I freely admit that I was unsure whether it would be worth the time: A museum about the history of postage and the postal service? In a country with a population of half a million? Why bother? Im so glad I overcame my hesitations. The museums stamp collection traces the entire modern history of the Maltese archipelago, from the very first halfpenny stamps issued early in Queen Victorias reign to celebrations of the papal visits in the 2000s, and is fascinating in itself; but what really makes the museum worthwhile is its illustrated tour of how the mail has gone through under different occupiers (the Knights of St. John, the French, the British) and under the most trying of circumstances (naval blockade, plague outbreak, wartime censorship). Short, well-produced films help illuminate the many letters in the collection and dont shy away from some of the more unpalatable aspects of Maltese history, such as the British haste in June 1940 to intern anyone suspected of pro-Italian sympathies, a policy that (as so often in wartime) ran roughshod over civil liberties. More than just a history of the post, its a unique window on the broader history of Malta, reminding us that even something as humdrum as delivering the mail on time can be an essential part of social infrastructure.

Anyway, Ill stop rambling now. But seriously, if you ever find yourself in Valletta, the Malta Postal Museum should definitely be on your itinerary.

The Futures So Bright "IndyWatch Feed Comics"

The pasts view of the future has us living in a techno- paradise, replete with flying cars, private rockets to Mars, and humanoid robots that will take care of our house chores, along with a plethora of other labor-saving tech allowing us to wallow in a leisurely, stress-free lifestyle. Humans would be relieved from lifes drudgery, with future tech solving our problems, including food production, disease, poverty, and pollution. As new scientific developments or concepts emerged, such as wireless communication, TV, and robots, the visions of the future became brighter. Cartoons in magazines and newspapers parodied these fanciful flights into the future, to the delight of their readers. Space travel, ray guns, and robots were seen throughout the popular culture landscape of newspapers, radio, magazines, and movies by the 1930s. This idyllic future arguably reached its pinnacle in the 1950s and 1960s, when space flight, computers, and microprocessors all came to the forefront of futuristic visions. TV shows like The Jetsons and Lost in Space brought the latest musings about the future into everyones homes. Commercial artist and industrial designer Arthur Radebaugh put all of this and more into his weekly strip Closer Than You Think. Running from 1958 to 1963, Radebaughs Sunday comic immersed the reading public with an unabashedly positive view of the future. He was partially right about the sea bottom robots; instead of walking on the ocean floor, they landed on Mars instead. Radebaughs Farm Rainmaker would be a big help with the droughts that now plague the United States and Europe. Given todays pollution, climate change, rising oceans, and growing populations, we may well need a fleet of his Space Mayflowers sooner as opposed to later. It is clear that here in the 21st century, the future is not as bright as it used to be.

It is increasingly becoming more important to discuss and share thoughts and concerns, as well as good news and good intentions.  These are controversial and sometimes divisive topics that are difficult to talk about.  Offering a safe and comfortable space where there is no judgement is therefore critically necessary.  We are in the midst of historical change and our collective support for each other is and will be needed more and more.  Your ability to communicate compassionately with others who are stepping into their awakening process will be a means to pursue the greatest good for all. See below for Zoom call details. Victory of the Light! Prepare For Change is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. Man Asks if Hes Wrong for Telling His Wife Hes Opening up a Separate Account For His Money "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Man Asks if Hes Wrong for Telling His Wife Hes Opening up a Separate Account For His Money

People in relationships have all kinds of issues and money can definitely be one of them.

Especially if one person in a union does some shady business without your permission.

So is this guy wrong for how he reacted to his wife?

Take a look and see what you think.

AITA for telling my wife I would open a separate account if she didnt get our money back?

I 39M have been married to my wife 36F for twelve years. We have no children, but we do have a cat and a dog who we consider to be our children.

My wife has a sister M 37F who has made very poor financial choices and is now heavily in debt. She refuses to get a job and instead jumps from on MLM or get rich quick scam to the next, sponging off of relatives to make ends meet.

Both me and my wife work full-time. We each have separate accounts that we use for our fun money for hobbies or whatever we want. We earn almost the same amount of money, with me being a little higher, so I contribute 60% and she contributes 40% to make things fair and also so we each have about the same amount of fun money.

We also have a joint checking and savings account that we use for the household bills and household emergency fund (like when the water heater flooded the basement in the middle of the night). Both of us have access to the joint accounts, and if we need to use it, it is...

New Magnet-Free Electric Motor Needs No Maintenance "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Chris Young, The new design also requires no rare earth elements, making it better for the environment.
German automotive parts manufacturer MAHLE developed a new highly efficient magnet-free induction motor that is more environmentally friendly to produce, is cheaper to manufacture than comparable motors, and is maintenance-free, a press statement from the Stuttgart-based firm explains. The company says it has combined the strengths of various electric motor concepts in one product, allowing for an efficiency "above 95 percent at almost all operating points" a level only achieved in Formula E racing cars thus far. MAHLE explains that its "new kind of magnet-free electric motor does not require rare earth elements." This makes production better for the environment as well as bringing "advantages in terms of costs and resource security," the company says in its release.

Wear-free and highly efficient at high speeds

The new motor uses a fine-tuned design to generate torque via contactless power transmission, making it wear-free and highly efficient at high speeds. When in use, a wireless transmitter sends an alternating electric current into the rotor. Th...

74% Post-Vaccine Deaths Caused by Jabs, Study Shows "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Frank Bergman, A staggering 74 percent of people who died after receiving a Covid vaccine were killed by the mRNA jab, a bombshell new study has revealed. The prestigious medical journal The Lancet published the explosive study on Wednesday. The study, a pre-print that was awaiting peer review, reviewed 325 autopsies of people who died after Covid vaccination. The researchers, led by cardiologist Dr. Peter McCullough and Yale epidemiologist Dr. Harvey Risch and including their colleagues at the Wellness Company, analyzed hundreds of autopsy reports of people who had died after recently being vaccinated for Covid. The study found that most people died within one week of receiving the Covid jab.
The mean average for shot-to-death was 14.3 days. The findings of the study were published online on Wednesday on the pre-print site of the renowned medical journal. However, the journal mysteriously removed the study within 24 hours. The study was replaced with a notice that reads: This preprint has been removed by Preprints with The Lancet because the studys conclusions are not supported by the study methodology. While the study had not undergone any part of the peer-review process, the note implies it fell foul of screening criteria. The original study abstract can be found in the...

You see it all the time on social media and it can be infuriating because you

Come to think of it, you see it a lot in politics, too, which isnt too surprising

And today, were going to hear from folks about idiots who are treated like geniuses.

Lets see what they had to say!

Oh, boy

Dr. Phil.

Hes a horrible person. He uses people who are in emotional crisis to make a ton of money.

Of course, a lot of his guests are pretty light in the intellectual department as well.

What a guy!

Simon Cowell.

Ironically, he spends so much of his time seeking talent when he has very little himself. While he knows the music industry, his father got him the job that brought him into it at EMI. Even left that job only to come back when he couldnt make it on his own.

He knows virtually nothing about music itself, or singing, instruemnts or anything really technical about anything that goes on around him.

While his comments about vulnerable, talentless people used to be a draw now that sort of thing is frowned upon it turns out that when hes not being a prick, hes boring as hell.

He was also stupid enough to believe that a cosmetic surgeon could make him not look like hes over 60 when, in r...

Woman Wants to Know if Shes a Jerk for Grounding Her Daughter Over Gardening

Kids today, huh?

They dont seem to have a lot of patience for things that they arent interested inand they can also be pretty selfish if were being honest about it.

But did this woman take things too far when she grounded her teenage daughter for not gardening with her?

Take a look at what she had to say.

AITA for grounding my daughter by not bonding with me on gardening?

I (47f) live with my husband and my youngest daughter (15f). My oldest daughter (20f) no longer lives with us and I feel a bit lonely, since she used to be my partner.

We did everything together, we liked the same things and we were best friends. I love my youngest daughter equally, I dont have a favorite child, but it has always been difficult for me to bond with her, because were too different.

My youngest daughter clearly prefers my husband, given that just like my oldest daughter, they are best friends: they do everything together, they like the same things, and they often bond over games, music, and anime.

Ive tried to bond more deeply with my daughter, but I dont understand her tastes, and when were alone we hardly ever have anything to talk about. My husband doesnt see it as a problem, and he often says each parent with its own daughter, but it doesnt seem right to me.

I recently decided to build a garden and asked my daughter to help me,...

12 Art Shows to See in Philadelphia This Summer "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

When you think of a city with a bustling art scene, Philadelphia may not immediately spring to mind. But its abundance of art schools, a growing number of art galleries, over 4,000 murals, and comparatively cheap rents make Philly a thriving art town. Many artists here are inspired by the citys history as a center of industry and craft hence the profusion of organizations like the Fabric Workshop and Museum, the Center for Art in Wood, and the Clay Studio. If youre in town, take a break from our sweltering, swampy summer air and taste a bit of the artistic wonder Philadelphia has to offer.

Brazilian Bitcoin Startup Bipa Raises $1.4 Million In Seed Round "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bipa, a Brazilian startup aiming to simplify financial transactions through Bitcoin, has announced the successful closure of its seed investment round, raising R$8 million (approximately $1.4 million).

Notable investors include New Form Capital. a venture capital fund focused on early-stage startups involved with blockchain technology and the financial market and Hivemind Ventures, which invests in startups with a Bitcoin focus, which both made their first investment in the Brazilian market through this round.

Founded in 2020 by Luiz Parreira, Bipa seeks to eliminate entry barriers and promote the use of bitcoin by providing a user-friendly digital account connected to instant payment networks PIX (Brazilian real) and Lightning (bitcoin). According to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, the startup aims to attract users who find the process of buying and selling Bitcoin challenging and struggle to understand exchange operations, catering to a broader audience seeking simplicity and convenience.

The press release stated that the funds raised will support Bipa's expansion in the market, attracting new users and developing new business-to-consumer (B2C) products. Parreira said, "Our mission is to make people using the Bipa application pay for coffee every morning." Currently, bitcoin usage remains niche in Brazil, with Bipa's primary focus on the local community. However, the company plans to broaden its reach and bring the financial and technological revolution of bitcoin to more individuals.

To coincide with its growth plans, Bipa has unveiled a new visual identity, emphasizing its accessibility and simplicity. The redesigned brand features a spring-shaped "B" logo, symbolizing impulse, and employs a lively and colorful palette. Parreira hopes that the rebranding efforts and improved user experience will encourage individuals outside the current Bitcoin ecosystem to join Bipa, with the goal of bringing over 15 million Brazilians into the Bitcoin community.

According to data from the Investor X-Ray report by the Brazilian Association of Financial and Capital Market Entities (Anbima), approximately 6 million Brazilians, around 3% of the population, declare investments in cryptocurrencies. With this investment round, Bipa aims to tap into this market potential and become the go-to option for those seeking an entry point into the bitcoin industry.

By Engraving Found Plastic Waste, Duke Riley Links Extractive Practices Throughout Human History "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

A plastic jug painted in bone-like beige cared with flowers and a man crouching over a grave

No. 382 of the Poly S. Tyrene Memorial Maritime Museum (2023),  painted, salvaged plastic, ink, wax, 12.5 x 8 x 3.5 inches

In the 1860s, the U.S. government introduced kerosene as an alternative for lighting lamps. Whale oil had previously dominated the market but was unsustainable given the appalling number of animals killed in order to provide power. The country quickly transitioned to fossil fuels, swapping one harmful and extractive practice for another. While whaling had its economic implications, it also birthed a largely nautical art form known as scrimshaw, or engravings in bone or ivory.

Artist Duke Riley is attuned to this history and its modern-day implications. He gathers laundry detergent jugs, flip-flops, and bottles that once held household products once they wash up near beaches and carves incisive allegories and ornamentation into their surfaces. Painted in a warm, grainy beige, the scavenged waste mimics the whale bones traditional to scrimshaw while the artists signature wit emerges through the contemporary narratives of oil barons or marine creatures carrying human trash.

Requiem for a US Ambassador "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Most ambassadors are not only intelligence officers but can serve in the capacity of being a general in a regional military type operation. Even though their job officially to act as a conduit between a foreign government and Americans on official business or as tourists. They also handle passport and visa services. American embassies have faced much more than they have bargained for in recent decades and being the diplomatic soil for America in a foreign land can become quite hazardous to ones health

History of diplomatic sacrifices

Most of the time we associate American Embassies with civilian operations, but that would be a nave assumption. Either ill will has come the way of our embassies due to bone headed decisions by faulty administrations or the internal political chaos of that country over takes the overseas state department employees. Below are some of the roles played by US ambassadors and embassies beginning with the Vietnam War.

Last hours atop the roof of the Saigan embassy

24 hours prior to the assassination of Ngo Dinh Diem, first President of the Republic of South Vietnam, he had a meeting with US Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge, also a CIA operative. What they discussed is not known but a coup de tat followed that year in 1963 and General Duong Van Minh became the new president. 12 years later after a war that could have been won by the US, but thanks to the mainstream media and radical, domestically inspired protests on US campuses, the US Embassy in Saigan became the site of a tragic last minute rescue effort of US citizens, US loyalists among the Vietnamese and what troops and officers still remained. One Huey Helicopter after another overloaded with desperate people seeking asylum from the Communists landed on aircraft carriers offshore as Vietcong forces remained on the outskirts of the city. Thousands of US friendly Vietnamese would be captured and executed as weeks rolled by.

Auto Experts Create Worlds Lowest Car You Can Actually Drive "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Auto Experts Create Worlds Lowest Car You Can Actually Drive

Upper part of Fiat Panda transformed into low-rider car

Photo: Screenshot from YouTube

How low can you go? That's the question this outrageously low car seems to answer. Carmagheddon, an Italy-based car modifier collective, set their minds on building the worlds lowest drivable car. The result is a tongue-in-cheek creation that tests what makes a car, well, a car.

To create this very low low-rider, the team of Cocchi RudiMatteo Marzetti and Nicola Guadagnincut a Fiat Panda in half. They then turned the upper part into a hilarious yet impressive vehicle that can work like any other vehicle on the road. To make this project come true, the designers installed a go-kart-sized vehicle frame within the Fiat Panda. Under the hood of the caror what remains of itthey added tiny wheels that are just tall enough to keep the metal from grazing the road.

So how do you drive this extremely low low-rider? Carmagheddon added a steering wheel that's closer to a video game controller. Whoever is driving the vehicle must crawl to get inside and stay on their knees or on their side for the whole ride. Looking out the windshield doesn't look like an option, as the conductor in the test rides is seen looking at the road through his phone, placed on the bottom of the vehicle.

The modified Fiat Panda was tested on both gravel roads and concrete streets, and it is a testament to the designers' vision that it drives smoothly, though slowly, on both. As ingenious as the result is, the small automobile can't help but look like a vehicle submerged in the asphalt or a car carcass on the loose.

If you want to take a closer look at their building process, scroll down to watch two videos from Carmagheddon about how this low-rider came to be. To stay up to date with their wild creations, you can follow them on Instagram.

He's constantly keeping tabs on upcoming storms, and so when a forecast predicted a massive lightning storm, he grabbed his gear and headed out on his balcony. In the end, his diligence was paid back tenfold by the stunning composite photo he came away with.

Over the course of 50 minutes, he was able to capture images of lightning bolts striking the water in Mudanya, Turkey. He then took 30 of his best frames and merged them together to create an amazing composite photo. While kizler clearly stated that the photo was a composite when he posted the image on Instagram, he said that many people still believe that all the lightning struck at once.

That would be a beautifulif not frighteningevent, but that wasn't the case. kizler actually published many of the individual photographs he used on YouTube and his blog. The Cancer New Moon may also bring new events or opportunities into our lives that can align us with feelings of purpose. Pay attention to things that are stirred under this New Moon, as they are likely to be a guide for us on which direction the Universe is pointing us in.

New Moon, New Intentions

Creating intentions is always a powerful thing to do come New Moon time, but under Julys New Moon, see if you can craft your intentions and ideas from a place of inner trust.

This requires us to go within, to sit with ourselves, and to direct the vision of our lives from a place of inner knowing and intuition. The answers may not come to us right away, but practicing patience is part of this process.

Creating intentions from a place of inner knowing is about flowing with the process and knowing that the right inspiration and answers will come when they are ready. This process requires surrender and a lot of faith, but ease tends to follow when we give over to it.

The Moon is Home in Cancer

Finding our ease may come easier to us under this New Moon, as the Moon loves to be in the sign of Cancer.

The Moon represents our emotions, our feelings of safety and security, and our feelings of comfort. The Moon can also be a representation of feminine energy in our lives.

With the Moon in its sweet spot in our cosmic skies, we may feel more connected and in tune with our emotions and feminine side, and we may have an easier time understanding what makes us feel secure.

As our emotional body will be easier to access, we may find ourselves drawn to explore our emotions and feelings in depth. We may find ourselves needing to sit with how we really feel, or to witness emotions bubbling beneath the surface so they rise for clearing.

Issues around our mother or mothering may come up under this New Moon too. Painful childhood memories may be evoked, or we may find ourselves needing to balance our mothering qualities. The mother wound can also trigger issues around comfort and security.

Do we feel stable and secure in ourselves and in ourselves? Are we able to comfort and soothe ourselves back to a state of balance?

Cancer energy can be like the Divine Mother, swooping in and caring for us in all t...

Estampas de la Raza: Contemporary Prints from the Romo Collection and Royal Chicano Air Force "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Featuring 73 screenprints and lithographs made between 1980 and 2010, and drawing from both the collection of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, Estampas de la Raza: Contemporary Prints from the Romo Collection and Royal Chicano Air Force highlights a vital but largely overlooked segment of contemporary American art, celebrating the collaboration and creativity of artists and print workshops in California and Texas.

Organized thematically into five sections, this exhibition at the Crocker Art Museum explores universal themes and key aspects of the Latinx experience: the identity of individuals striving to define themselves; the Chicano Movements struggle to achieve economic, political, and personal equality; the tradition, memory, and culture of everyday life; iconic figures that represent social and political causes; and the influence of Latinx culture on contemporary American life and art.

Many of the artists in Estampas de la Raza were inspired by the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s and draw on artistic traditions ranging from Mexican printmaking to mural painting, as well as other sources such as folk art, Pop art, and graffiti. The breadth of art displayed proves that Latinx art and artists are far from homogenous, and the variety of work highlights the many facets of Latinx and Chicanx culture. Yet what unites...

AI Visualizes Drivers Based on Car Brands, Reveals Stereotypes Pushed by Technology "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

AI Visualizes Drivers Based on Car Brands, Reveals Stereotypes Pushed by Technology

Rerev AI Driver Stereotypes

Recent experiments with AI generators have highlighted the incredible bias that exists in the technology. Recently, the automotive website Rerev decided to conduct its own test on the stereotypes pushed by AI. To do so, they asked ChatGPT to describe the average owner of 10 popular car brands. Then, they used those descriptions as prompts in Midjourney to generate an image of these car owners. The results are interesting and eye-opening about how drivers are perceived by AI.

The first obvious issue is that AI only generated images of men, highlighting a strong gender bias in the automotive world. Each car owner had their nationality tied to the origins of the brand. So, the Ferrari owner is Italian, while the Honda and Toyota owners are Japanese. These nationalities were selected outside of any specific description written by ChatGPT.

In the case of Volkswagen, AI solely focused on the brand's association with van life by depicting a man with a more bohemian look. This choice clearly overlooks different models of Volkswagens and their owners, who likely live more conservative lifestyles.

Similarly, the Chevrolet and Ford owners both have a rugged, All-American look to them. While these American brands are certainly connected to working-class culture, there are also plenty of owners who live in urban settings and don't have a pick-up truck.

As with all of these AI series, it's important to think deeply about why the technology gave specific results and what this means about our own personal bias.

This is how AI perceives the drivers of 10 common car brands.

The Arrival Of BlackRock: Bitcoins First Spot ETF "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

The article below is an excerpt from a recent edition of Bitcoin Magazine PRO, Bitcoin Magazine's premium markets newsletter. To be among the first to receive these insights and other on-chain bitcoin market analysis straight to your inbox, subscribe now.

The Arrival Of BlackRock

As most readers are likely aware, ripples were sent through the bitcoin investment space with the announcement of a spot bitcoin ETF application from BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager. The move from the $10 trillion asset manager stoked plenty of excitement and concerns alike from bitcoin proponents, with many championing the potential for massive inflows from legacy institutional investors, while others pushed back, citing the risks that such a product structure could pose to the bitcoin market. The introduction of such a product could bolster bitcoins profile among traditional investors, but its vital to understand the potential implications.

This article delves into the BlackRock proposal, comparing it with existing bitcoin investment vehicles, assessing the potential risks and benefits and drawing parallels with the introduction of liquid investment vehicles into the gold market, which many analogize as bitcoins monetary predecessor. The goal is to evaluate the implications of such a product on the broader bitcoin market and institutional adoption, while keeping in mind the principles that underpin the potential of bitcoin to serve as a global neutral reserve asset and settlement layer.

BlackRock's Bitcoin Trust Proposal: An In-Depth Examination

BlackRock's submission of an S-1 with the SEC marks a significant development in the bitcoin investment landscape. Although not an ETF in name, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust application bears striking resemblance to an ETF in function by allowing for daily subscriptions and redemptions, distinguishing it from existing bitcoin investment vehicles like Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).

In contrast to the current leading bitcoin investment product, Grayscales GBTC, BlackRock's trust proposes an in-kind redemption feature. This means investors arent tied to selling their shares and creating a taxable event; instead, they can opt for withdrawing bitcoin from the trust. This circumvents the tax implications that Grayscale investors face when selling their shares for fiat and then purchasing bitcoin.

However, its important to note that the proposed in-kind redemptions come with a big caveat: Only BlackRocks authorized participants, essentially investment firms in good standing with BlackRock, can withdraw bitcoin from the product. This implies that the benefit of in...

How to Be More Alive: Hermann Hesse on Wonder and the Proper Aim of Education "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

While wandering down the path of wonder, I briefly escape the world of separation and enter the world of unity.

How to Be More Alive: Hermann Hesse on Wonder and the Proper Aim of Education

It bears repeating that what makes life livable is our ability our willingness to move through the world wonder-smitten by reality. The most wonderful thing about wonder is that it knows no scale, no class, no category it can be found in a geranium or in a galaxy, in the burble of a brook or in the Goldberg Variations. A leaf of grass is no less than the journey work of the stars, wrote Walt Whitman, eternal patron saint of wonder.

Wonder, after all, is what we look for when we are looking and the richest recompense of learning how to look. G.K. Chesterton knew this when, in his wonderful meditation on the dandelion and the meaning of life, he observed that the object of the creative life, of the full life, is to dig for the submerged sunrise of wonder. Dylan Thomas knew it in the recognition that children in wonder watching the stars, is the aim and the end. Rachel Carson knew it when she insisted that the greatest gift a parent can give a child is a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing antidote against the boredom and disenchantments of later years, the sterile preoccupation with things that...

The 20th century ushered in many significant art movements. One of the most influential that emerged from this period was Bauhaus. Originating in Germany at a school of the arts, this movement dominated paintings, graphics, architecture, and even interiors in European art throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Swiss-born artist Paul Klee was one of its early pioneers, teaching at Bauhaus for 10 years alongside other icons like Wassily Kandinsky. The Zentrum Paul Kleea museum in Bern, Switzerlandis sharing 3,900 pages from Klee's personal notebooks which display some of the detailed notes he made for his classes.

These journals include hand-written entries in German and numerous sketches and diagrams covering topics like color theory and design. Presumably, these notes were reworked into the lectures Klee gave at Bauhaus during his long tenure. While momentous during their own time, his essays on modern art are still regarded as an invaluable source of the principles of modern art. In fact, his lectures were even collected and published in two volumes titled The Thinking Eye and The Nature of Nature.

The writings which compose Paul Klee's theory of form production and pictorial form have the same importance and the same meaning for modern art as had Leonardo's writings which composed his theory of p...

A Granite Replica of a Bedroom Closet Honors Personal and Collective Memories in New York City AIDS Memorial Park "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

A granite sculpture in New York City AIDS Memorial Park of a bedroom closet by Jim Hodges.

Craigs closet (2023), granite and bronze, 90 x 57 x 28 1/2 inches. Installed in New York City AIDS Memorial Park. Photos by Daniel Greer, Jim Hodges, courtesy of the artist and Gladstone Gallery, shared with permission

In 1981, the emergency room at St. Vincents Hospital in Manhattan began to see an influx of young gay and bisexual men with startling weight loss, pneumonia, rare infections, and compromised immunity. Two years later, the HIV virus was identified as the cause of AIDS, which quickly reached epidemic proportions, and St. Vincents opened the firstand largestAIDS ward on the East Coast.

In 2016, a public park became the home to the New York City AIDS Memorial, honoring the more than 100,000 residents who died of the disease, as well as those who lobbied for medical research and access to drugs and fought discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. Marking a continuation of the memorials public art program, a new sculpture by Jim Hodges is both a heartfelt ode to a young New Yorker who succumbed to the illness and an invitation to consider complex histories and personal and collective memories.

Craigs closet, a granite and bronze work that stands like a monolith in the middle of the park, considers the personal, metaphorical, and physical significance of the ubiquitous storage space. It is an exact replica of the bedroom closet belonging to musician Craig Ducote, who shared a home with Hodges unt...

The following letters were sent by David Wojnarowicz to his Parisian lover Jean Pierre Delage in 1979, as part of a three-year transatlantic correspondence that ended in 1982. In them, the artist details his day-to-day life with the type of unbridled earnestness that comes with that age, providing a picture of a young man just beginning to find his voice in the world and of the love he has found in it. Although the two exchanged letters in equal measure, Delages have largely been lost, leaving us only with a glimpse into the internal world of Wojnarowicz during what turned out to be his formative years.

Capturing a foundational moment for Wojnarowiczs artistic and literary practice, the letters not only reveal his captivating personality but also index the development of the visual language that would go on to define him as one of the preeminent artists of his generation. Included with his writings are postcards, drawings, Xeroxes, photographs, collages, flyers, and other ephemera that showcase some of Wojnarowiczs iconic images and work, as well as document the New York that formed the backdrop to his practice.

TV Doesnt Have Space For Fatness "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Television distorts, mocks and marginalizes fat people. Fat characters are reduced to caricatures whose stories and identities arent developed and dont matter. In one study by Tzoutzou et al., all 36 compliments about appearance given to women were for thin women. Not one positive message was included for a woman of an average or overweight body type. For men, the same pattern was found: only one overweight character received a positive message.

Collage by Victoria Lieberman

These TV shows tell the audience that external beauty only resides in thinness and excludes anyone who deviates from this definition of beauty. Viewers can internalize this thin ideal, which in turn can make it difficult for the audience to feel good about themselves, especially if their body doesnt fit this body standard. Seeing the treatment of fat people on TV can affect how viewers think about their own bodies, especially if their body type doesnt fit the thin ideal.

Bigger Bodies, Smaller Roles

Not only is the representation of fat people overwhelmingly negative, but fat bodies are underrepresented on TV shows.

You Can Attach This Tent to Your Paddle Board to Sleep on the Water

Floating Tent by BAJAO

From gazing at the stars to being surrounded by a quiet calm, there's a lot to enjoy about camping. We usually think of sleeping on land, when we talk about camping, but BAJAO is offering a new way to experience the outdoors. The German brand has created an all-in-one tent that can be affixed to your paddle board so that you can sleep on the water and not get wet.

Called BAJAO Cabin, this innovative product fits any paddle board longer than 11 feet 6 inches and comes with stabilizing pipes so that the tent remains safely attached. While you can't bring this tent onto waterways, you can use it to sleep on calm bodies of water. All you have to do is use a pump to inflate the pipes, a process that takes under two minutes.

In addition to providing shelter from the sun, this tent also includes a barrier to keep insects out. And if you're ever in the mood to look at the moon, you can remove the flysheet on top and still have a transparent layer to deter bugs. BAJAO Cabin also features a durable and waterproof floor made from 150D Oxford polyester fabric. This makes the tent usable for water, but also on other surfaces like mud, sand, or rock. When it's not in use, the tent can be packed down into an easy-to-carry backpack.

BAJAO's all-in-one tent is currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, where you can purchase it for the early-bird price of $412.

Scientific Principles and Craft Traditions Converge in Tauba Auerbachs Research-Focused Practice "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Tauba Auerbach (previously) wants to be somewhere that isnt a hard edge, within a space that mimics the instability of The Wave Organ. Embedded within a jetty of the San Francisco Bay, the sculpture was created by Peter Richards and George Gonzalez in 1986 and captures the sounds of waves as they crash into and fill the pipes, emitting a musical mix of gurgling and gushing noises as the tide changes. The work is designed to highlight the acoustic irregularities of Earths elements and is also one of Auerbachs favorite locations in their native San Francisco.

In a new episode of Art21s 11th season, Bodies of Knowledge, which premiered in late June, Auerbach visits the instrument and explains their interest in natural patterns and processes, physics, and mathematic principles. They harbor a profound curiosity and desire to understand the complex systems that undergird life, many of which they interpret as swirling marbled paper, spontaneous tessellated drawings in marker, and writhing beaded sculptures that evoke biological forms like the rigid composition of a sea sponge.
