Ethereum (ETH) recently witnessed a remarkable event that sent ripples of excitement through the crypto community. An Ethereum whale emerged from a prolonged slumber, making a substantial return to the scene after remaining inactive for more than two years.

A whale is a term used to describe individuals or entities holding significant amounts of cryptocurrency.

The identity of this prominent investor has been revealed as an early participant in Ethereums groundbreaking initial coin offering (ICO), which played a pivotal role in the platforms inception.

Ethereum Whale Resurfaces With 4,032 ETH Stake

The Ethereum whale, who played a significant role in Ethereums early days, recently made headlines by staking an impressive 4,032 ETH, valued at approximately $7.4 million, according to Lookonchain, a reputable blockchain analytics platform.

Toncoin (TON) Price Plummets As Bears Overpower Bulls In Market Downturn "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Toncoin is trading in the red today, losing some of its price gains in the past week. Its 24-hour trading volume is down over 3% at press time, indirectly contributing to todays price slump.

TON traded at the $2 price level since January 1, 2023, slowly accumulating its gains. However, the bears forced a price decline to the $1.9 price level on May 9, 2023, where the asset trades today.

TONs Movement Suggests A Bearish Trend Ahead

TON is in a downtrend, forming a red candle. It has dropped below its 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA), confirming the bearish trend. Also, TONs Moving average Convergence/Divergence (MACD) is below its signal line and shows a negative value, which is also bearish sentiment.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is 42.65, dropping out of the neutral zone as it approaches the oversold region 30. The indicator is also moving downwards, reflecting the pressure from the bears.

TONs price will likely decline till it rests on its nearest support level and the bulls rally again. Moreover, TONs 200-day SMA shows a long-term bullish sentiment.

Toncoin (TON) Price Plummets As Bears Overpower Bulls In Market Downturn

TON is just above the $1.8422 support as the bears mount pressure. A decline below this level will cause a price drop to $1.7525, its next support level. The bearish pressure at the $1.9918 resistance led to the current price drop for the asset. TON will likely continue its downtrend in the short term.

Recent Development Trends On Toncoin Network Likely To Influence Its Price

The Ton Foundation announced the latest network developments in a blog post for community members. These developments could lead to a positive price action soon.

Artist Kehinde Wiley draws inspiration from the past to inform his contemporary portraiture. The subjects of his paintings are front and center among verdant imagery. Colorful blooms and repeating patterns surround them like the decadent wallpaper youd expect in a palatial setting. They recall paintings youd find in a museum created by the Old Masters. Here, however, Wiley centers the work on Black and Brown figures. They assume the regal positions that have been historically reserved for white European nobility.

Wileys latest series of paintings titled HAVANA continues this artistic exploration as a focus on global Black culture. The collection is inspired by two trips the artist made to Cuba and looks at the phenomenon of the carnivalesque in Western culture. Its visual references were inspired by artists including Toulouse-Lautrec, Picasso, and Calder as well as Western European depictions of the circus, street performance, dance, and the carnivalesque.

The circus is a place, but its also a metaphor. Wiley focuses on the carnivalesque through circus performers who embrace a dynamic and vibrant way of living and being in the world. The circus is where those who exist on the fringes of societybe it cultural, religious, or socialcan find a place. When viewed from an African or African diasporic point of view, the celebratory and spirited events offer moments of reprieve, freedom, and joy that formerly enslaved people could...

Crypto Regulation In South Korea Under Scrutiny Following Gruesome Murder Case "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Crypto regulation is gaining momentum in South Korea as lawmakers seek to impose stricter rules on digital assets in response to a shocking murder case linked to cryptocurrency.

In a tragic incident reported by Bloomberg, a Korean woman was kidnapped and subsequently killed in what appears to be a dispute arising from losses related to crypto.

The gravity of the crime, which reportedly took place late March, has placed the spotlight on the efforts of lawmakers to expedite the countrys inaugural standalone crypto bill, which may soon undergo a parliamentary vote, potentially as early as this month.

The incident has underscored the need for comprehensive regulatory measures to address the risks and challenges associated with the burgeoning crypto industry.

On Focus: Virtual Asset User Protection Bill

This event has prompted lawmakers to accelerate the passage of the nations inaugural standalone crypto bill, known as the Virtual Asset User Protection Bill, which consolidates 19 different crypto-related measures into a single comprehensive legislation.

it aims to establish precise legal definitions for virtual assets and introduce penalties for offenses such as insider trading and market manipulation.

Furthermore, the proposed legislation seeks to grant the Financial Services Commission in South Korea the authority to supervise cryptocurrency companies and oversee the custody of digital assets.

Different Regulatory Paths For Crypto, Securities Tokens

Under the new rules, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin will be subject to the proposed regulations, while tokens categorized as securities by the government will continue to be governed by existing capital-markets laws.

By establishing clear guidelines for digital assets, South Korea aims to fortify the resilience of the crypto industry and protect investors from potential risks.

The bills provision for mandatory insurance coverage aims to provide a safety net for digital asset firms, shielding them from financial losses in the event of cyberattacks or breaches.

Additionally, the stricter rules on reserve funds and account keeping seek to ensure greater transparency and accountability within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.

The introduction of the Virtual Asset User Protection Bill comes at a crucial moment for South Korea as the nation grapples with gr...

For more than ten years, Ruslan Khasanov (previously) has been enthralled by the ecstatic effects of light, color, and movement, which he expresses in an ongoing series of photographs and videos. Composed of a mixture of liquids like water, oil, and paint, he captures hundreds of high-resolution images that are then edited into a short film titled Space Iris, which is accompanied by an original composition by Fabio Fonda. The iris, with its intricate patterns and colors, shares a striking resemblance to the vibrant and colorful cosmic nebula, Khasanov says. Just as the eye is a window to the soul, the nebula serves as a window to the vast universe beyond.

Leading Lawyer Warns Of Consequences For Ripple In SEC Lawsuit "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

A partner at Hogan & Hogan, Attorney Jeremy Hogan, has weighed in on talks about the Ripple lawsuit. The pro-XRP lawyer said Ripple would get an unfavorable outcome if Judge Torres moved the Fair Notice Defence (FND) issue to trial.

According to Hogan, there would be an FND trial only if Ripple loses its case to the Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC) under the Section 5 violation.

Hogans Opinion On The Fair Notice Defence Trial

Hogan has supportively followed up on the Ripple vs. SEC lawsuit. In recent discussions, he noted that Judge Analisa Torres remark about the Hinman speech drafts suggests she has yet to rule on the FND issue.

During the latest hearing on the Ripple vs. SEC lawsuit on Tuesday, May 16, Judge Torres stated her decision on both parties request to seal summary judgment motion-related documents.

However, for the XRP community, the most remarkable part of the judges order was the courts denial of the SECs request to seal the 2018 Hinman speech drafts.

While delivering her decision, Judge Torres said: Whether the court relies on the Hinman documents in ruling on the summary judgment motions, they are judicial documents subject to the presumption of public access.

While commenting on the judges decision, Hogan noted that the first remarks suggest that she only denied the SECs motion to seal the Hinman documents or has not addressed the fair notice defense issue.

The Controversial Fair Notice Defence Issue

Part of Ripples defense in the ongoing lawsuit is that the SEC failed to issue a fair notice before suing it for securities law violation.

In a previous hearing on April 11, the SEC filed a document supporting its motion for summary judgment against Ripple, citing its recent victory against Commonwealth Equity Services

Notably, the court deemed that a long-running precedent provides sufficient fair notice in the Commonwealth Equity vs. SEC case.

Bringing it to the Ripple case, the SEC argued that the longstanding court precedent, which gave rise to the Howey test, gives Ripple a fair n...

Big Player Buys LADYS, Meme Token Bull Run Incoming? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

DWF Labs, a global digital asset market maker and investment firm, is buying more LADYS, on-chain data on May 17 shows.

DWF Labs Buying LADYS

Trackers indicate that the market maker bought 1.9 trillion LADYS for 108 ETH worth roughly $196,000 at the time of the purchase.

These purchases were made on Uniswap v3, a decentralized exchange allowing for trustless token swapping on several blockchains.

While DWF Labs purchase could be worth watching, it is not immediately clear why they are buying the meme token that its creators say will be the quintessential token for internet spirituality in the days ahead.

There are concerns that the market marker is trying the pump LADYS so that they can liquidate and profit later. On the other hand, DWF Labs could be genuinely interested in the project and want to speculate, riding on the meme culture that has gripped the cryptocurrency markets in recent weeks.

LADYS is a meme coin that was created by the Milady creator, an NFT project on the Ethereum blockchain. Miladys creator says the LADYS is a meme token with zero utility but is self-organized and a drip currency.

There is also a disclaimer that the project has no association with Charlotte Fang or her creation Milady Maker but is simply paying homage to an NFT collection we all love and recognize.

Meme Coin Activity Is Falling

Considering the recent success of meme tokens like PEPE, LADYS has been flying higher, drawing attention despite the tokens lack of intrinsic utility.

Even so, CoinMarketCap data on May 18 shows that LADYS has been cooling off in recent days, despite its overall market capitalization remaining decent at $69,219,733. With this, the token is ranked 324th in the market cap leaderboard.

Part of this high market cap could be because the token is listed in some centralized exchanges besides Uniswap, where it is actively traded. CoinMarketCap data shows that LADYS actively trades on MEX and Gate.io, two popular periphery cryptocurrency exchanges.

Following the listing on these centralized exchanges, the meme tokens trading activity appears to have contracted in Uniswap.

However, Etherscan data...

Bitcoin Bullish Signal: Whales Accumulate 84,897 BTC "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

On-chain data shows the Bitcoin whales have accumulated 84,897 BTC during the last five weeks, something that could be bullish for the price.

Bitcoin Whales Have Been Growing Their Holdings Recently

According to data from the on-chain analytics firm Santiment, when whales last accumulated like this, the price jumped about 34%. The relevant indicator here is the BTC Supply Distribution, which tells us about the total amount (as well as the percentage) of the Bitcoin supply that each wallet group in the market is holding currently.

The addresses on the network are divided into these wallet groups based on the number of coins that they are carrying in their balances at the moment. The 10-100 coins cohort, for instance, includes all addresses that are holding at least 10 and at most 100 BTC currently.

Naturally, if the Supply Distribution is applied to this specific group, it would measure the amount of the supply that wallets satisfying this condition are holding as a whole.

Now, in the context of the current discussion, the Bitcoin cohort of interest is the whale group. Whales are humongous entities that carry at least 1,000 BTC ($26.8 million at the current exchange rate) and at most 10,000 BTC ($268 million) in their wallets. This means that the 1,000-10,000 coins group is of relevance here.

The below chart shows the trend in the Bitcoin Supply Distribution for this particular cohort over the past year:

Bitcoin Whales

As displayed in the graph, the Bitcoin Supply Distribution for the whale group has observed an overall uptrend recently. During the last five weeks, these humongous investors have added around 84,897 BTC to their holdings, which is worth around $2.2 billion.

Generally, the behavior followed by the whales can be something to watch out for, as their massive holdings mean that they have the potential to cause noticeable ripples in the market through their moves.

An example of this can be clearly seen in the chart. In the leadup to and during the rally back in January of this year, the whales displayed a trend of accumulation and grew their supplies by around 71,690 BTC.

While this accumulation occurred, the price of Bitcoin started its sur...

Dogecoin Multiple Attempts At $0.10: Will The Barrier Finally Be Broken? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Dogecoin (DOGE), in light of the current meme coin craze, has become a major topic of conversation and speculation in the financial circles. Over the past weeks, Dogecoin has tallied decent gains in value, and getting the nod of investors and enthusiasts alike.

Dogecoin has witnessed a considerable rise, driven by factors such as celebrity endorsements, social media frenzy, and the growing acceptance of cryptocurrencies in mainstream culture.

Now, as the month of May approaches its fourth week, many are eagerly anticipating whether the meme coin will reach the highly anticipated milestone of $0.10 per coin.

Dogecoin Price Rollercoaster Ride

In April of this year, Dogecoin reached a new high after Tesla and former Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who is one of the most vocal supporters of DOGE, changed the social media platforms logo to a Shiba Inu dog, which has become synonymous with the cryptocurrency.

The move was seen as a significant endorsement of Dogecoin, and its value surged by more than 25% in a matter of hours.

However, the excitement was short-lived as the price of Dogecoin soon corrected, leading to concerns that the cryptocurrency was simply a speculative bubble waiting to burst. But the DOGE faithful remained steadfast, and as the weeks went by, the cryptocurrency began to regain its momentum.

There It Goes Again

Yesterday, the price of the meme coin went up as the billionaire responded to a tweet: Such Doge, much hair! with a laughing emoticon.

In recent days, Dogecoin has once again moved up the ranks, thanks in part to the appointment of Twitters new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, who is rumored to be a fan of cryptocurrencies.

Visa Deploys Paymaster Smart Contract On Ethereum Testnet "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Cuy Sheffield, Head of Crypto at Visa, a global payments technology company operating in over 200 countries, has confirmed that they have deployed its first paymaster smart contract on the Goerli testnet of Ethereum, a smart contracting platform.

Visa Is Experimenting

In a tweet on May 17, 2023, Sheffield said that Visa would continue researching and experimenting with account abstraction and EIP-4337 in the days ahead.

His comments were confirmed by a team member who said that the payments company is actively exploring the potential of smart contracts and the future of programmable money and payments.

As part of its experiment on the Goerli testnet, Visa will look at how it can further take advantage of EIP-4337 in deploying a functional paymaster smart contract to evaluate its utility.

The paymaster is a smart contract account that Visa says sponsors transaction fees for contract accounts. These trials are on Goerli, a public testnet on Ethereum for users to test decentralized applications (DApps) without paying gas fees.

Specifically, the payments technology company will be channeling efforts to look at how best it can deploy the paymaster smart contract to serve its client base. Interestingly, Visa will investigate whether its clients can pay as fees using alternative tokens like USDT and not ETH.

According to Visa, this will help solve real-world problems and enhance the user experience when posting on-chain transactions.

EIP-4337 Could Open Up Ethereum To More Possibilities

EIP-4337 is an improvement proposal recently approved by Ethereum developers and set for mainnet integration. The proposal defines an account abstraction standard for the Ethereum blockchain.

Account abstraction is the idea of separating the logic behind deployed decentralized applications from account management.

Implementing this proposal introduces a smart account entirely governed by code. This code manages the social recovery of private keys, for example, or appending multi-wallet signatures.

In this way, more possibilities can be opened up, driving usability. Subsequently, this may accelerate adoption by releasing features such as passwordless login or one-click transactions.

Analysts say the ideas proposed by EIP-4337 will introduce flexibility for entities or individuals designing Ethereum and token wallets. Developers will also be allowed to be more cre...

Is Bitcoin Ready For A Breakout? Glassnode Co-Founder Weighs In "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Bitcoin, the worlds largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has been in a consolidation phase for the past few weeks. While this may seem like a period of relative stability, on-chain intelligence platform Glassnode co-founder Yann Allemann suggests that it could indicate an impending price movement.

In the past, similar consolidation periods have often been followed by price swings, and investors are closely watching for any signs of where the market might be headed.

While some investors may be nervous about the recent consolidation, others see it as an opportunity to buy in before the next big move. As the market awaits the next Bitcoin price action, analysts and enthusiasts alike are speculating on what might come next for the leading cryptocurrency.

Factors Indicating A Positive Outlook For Bitcoin Price

Amidst the current state of the Bitcoin market, several factors have been identified by Allemann on Twitter, which contribute to the prediction of a positive future for the cryptocurrency. These factors include the depletion of short-sellers resources, the reinforcement of support levels, and the expectation of an overall bullish trend.

Bitcoins price has been fluctuating within the range of $26,500 and $27,100, a period characterized by the prevalence of extreme fear sentiment among market participants.

At the time of writing CoinGecko shows Bitcoins price stands at $27,372, reflecting a modest 1.9% increase over the past 24 hours. However, it is worth noting that the cryptocurrency has also experienced a slight decline of 0.2% over the course of the previous seven days.

But now, at least, we have a substitute in the form of the ships digital twin, based on more than 700,000 images collected underwater over 200 hours. It provides a unique 3D view of the entire ship, enabling it to be seen as if the water has been drained away, report BBC News Rebecca Morelle and Alison Francis. The scan was carried out in summer 2022 by Magellan Ltd, a deep-sea mapping company, and Atlantic Productions, who are making a documentary about the project.

You can catch a glimpse of how the scan looks in the clip from the Times at the top of the post, but it only hints at its true level of detail. The joint mission by Magellan and Atlantic Productions deployed two submersibles nicknamed Romeo and Juliet to map every millimeter of the wreck, including the debris field spanning some three miles, writes Ars Techicas Jennifer Ouellette.

I've researched the afterlife for nearly 10 years. I think there is wisdom there! "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

I've researched the afterlife for nearly 10 years. I am convinced that Reptilian beings are REAL and that the tunnel of light that people see when they die is a trap.

Introduction

For the last 10 years, I have been researching the nature of our reality, who or what controls our society from the shadows, and more importantly what actually happens when the physical body dies and the soul leaves the body. Do we go to heaven? Do we go to hell? Do we just cease to exist? Is there a God that takes care of us? Once you begin to realize what's actually going on and how deep the rabbit hole really goes, you will never see the world in the same way so buckle up and get ready, this is not going to be easy to swallow for most people. The whole point of this post is not to frighten you, but to present you the conclusions that I've come to in regards to what actually happens when our physical bodies die after having done what feels like endless research from every angle possible.

I have thoroughly investigated near death experiences, out-of-body experiences, astral projection experiences, past life regression hypnosis data, remote viewing data, gnosticism, ancient texts and more. I cannot say I know with absolute certainty what happens when we die, but what I do know is that all these different ways/methodologies of researching lead to the same conclusions and because of that, I believe that Earth is a prison planet and a massive farm used by various parasitic entities who are using us and have been using us as energetic food for what appears to be a very long time. I will share plenty of evidence from different sources an...

In its original offering, Google developed certificate programs in five professional areas: User Experience (UX) Design, Data Analytics, Project Management, IT Support and IT Automation. Now, the tech company has added two new programs to its lineup, each offered through Courseras online education platform.

First, the Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate builds on the original Data Analytics Certificate and delves into machine learning, predictive modeling, and experimental design to collect and analyze large amounts of data. Featuring seven courses in total, the program takes roughly six months to complete and aims to teach students how to 1) build regression and machine learning models to analyze and interpret data, 2) create data visualizations and apply statistical methods to investigate data, and 3) communicate insights from data analysis to stakeholders. Essentially, it teaches many tools of the trade needed to become a senior data analyst or junior data scientist.

People Who Are No Longer Bound by Non-Disclosure Agreements Open Up About Business Secrets "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Lets hear about some business secrets that most folks out there are totally clueless about.

Uh oh.

That married grocery store manager in his late 40s was , indeed, having s** with that 17 year old courtesy clerk in the compressor room.

This was 15 plus years ago when I was a Person In Charge, and not yet a full Assistant Store Manager. Our store in the backroom had a couple of rooms upstairs: a large room that housed all of our electrical breakers and back up generators, and a room that housed all of our compressors that kept our freezers and coolers running. Both were locked at all times for security reasons. They were accessible only through the backroom.

The 17 year old courtesy clerk (bagger), had worked there for a while. She was, uh, not the best worker. She had a habit of disappearing for a half hour or hour at a time. I, and the other PICs complained and tried discipline, but the store manager blocked it. So, we just dealt with it. Yes, she was an attractive blonde.

I was in charge one night and we got an alarm that one of the compressors was low. It was my job to check the level, record the compressor number, and turn it in. When I went up to the room, the door was propped open with a bucket. I assumed whoever worked in the room last left it open. If you have never been in a compressor room before, I have to tell you that it is LOUD! Our store had several diesel engines that powered the compressors.

I proceed in to the back of t...

The Sunday Funnies Colorful History "IndyWatch Feed Comics"

Look closelyvery closelyat a Sunday comic strip in a printed newspaper. You might need the magnifying feature on a smartphone or a loupe, a small magnifying device, to see the dots that make up most areas of color on Sunday pages, and all of the tints in black ink Sunday through Saturday.

Clustered dots of varying sizes fool the eye into seeing tones. Just four ink colorsblack, cyan (light blue), magenta (a rosy red), and yellowcan combine in different densities to form most colors, though some appear garish or washed out. Newspapers began printing color in 1894 using this process and continue today. The dots used to simulate tones are referred to generically as a screen or in photos as a halftone.

Cartoonists dont create these dotstheyre added during print production. Cartoonists started with pen and ink on paper. Starting in 1894, their drawings were shot as photographic negatives, which were then exposed under intense light onto photosensitized zinc metal plates.

To add tints, cartoonists (or often an assistant or colorist) roughly marked up their drawings, indicating which grays or colors should appear in which areas. Comics syndicates created a limited set of colors to choose from based on mixing tints at different percentages, and those numbers would be marked on the comic. Some cartoonists used color pencil or watercolors on their original or a copy as an additional guide.

In production, engravers took these zinc platesa single black plate for weekdays, and four separate ones for Sunday color comicsand painted around each area that needed tone using a water-soluble material called gamboge. They applied an oily ink to a sheet in a frame somewhat resembling a silk screen called a Ben Day screen that was covered with tiny dots for the desired tint. The engraver then placed the screen over the areas on the zinc plate that needed tint applied and used a burnisher to rub down the Ben Day pattern. They then washed the gamboge off. They might have to do this dozens to hundreds of times for a Sunday strip.

The zinc plate subsequently went into an acid bath that etched areas unexposed to light and those not covered by Ben Day dots. This left all the exposed and inked areas in relief for printing. Newspaper printing and nearly all other printing through the 1980s relied on inking these raised surfaces and pressing them directly onto paper. (By the 1980s, a flat-plate process called offset printing had replaced relief printing.)

A syndicate took these plates and under pressure created paper molds (or mats) in the hundreds or thousands to send to newspapers around the country. Newspapers cast lead alloy plates from the molds for their presses.

Today, cartoonists work in full color and rely on a digital process to separate their colors into CMYK, but the same tiny dots rule the Sunday roost.

What Creepy Things Did You Notice About Another Family? People Shared Their Stories. "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

It can be a bit of a shock to see how other people live.

We all get so stuck in our own bubbles that we sometimes forget that there are whole other families out there who are justweird.

And it can be pretty creepy!

What creepy things did you notice about another family?

Check out how AskReddit users answered that question.

A nice snack.

Went to a friends house when I was 17.

She asked her mom for a snack and her mom brought out a huge raw white onion completely slathered in mayo on a plate and she and my friend just went at it with their forks like it was filet mignon.

Four years later and I still think about that s**t from time to time.

Insanity.

Uhhhh, this is actually abuse, and my mom did call CPS on them, but Ill say it anyway.

We knew a family growing up that the father would time their showers, literally 15 seconds under cold water, he would stand there and watch and then grab them out, one after the other.

They were not allowed to poop in the house. He had toilet paper for emergencies and guests. If they HAD to poop, he would pass them 5 squares of TP total, and watch them wipe. They trained themselves to only poop at school and church.

Summer would get to be 100 and still not air or fans in their bedroom, no open windows.

Probably about 20 more insane rules. Weird food rules. Very very very sad.

WELL DONE.

I have an ex whose family would literally burn any meat they cooked for dinner. Chicken, fish, steak all completely burned.

They were terrified about bacteria on their food. I got them to cook my steak medium well (less burned, but still above well) once, but I got some serious looks of disgust.

Destiny: John Perlin, A Forest Journey: The Role of Trees in the Fate of Civilization "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

A Foundational Conservation Story RevivedAncient writers observed that forests always recede as civilizations develop and grow. The great Roman poet Ovid wrote that before civilization began, even the pine tree stood on its own very hills but when civilization took over, the mountain oak, the pine were felled. This happened for a simple reason: trees have been the principal fuel and building material of every society over the millennia, from the time urban areas were settled until the middle of the nineteenth century. To this day trees still fulfill these roles for a good portion of the worlds population.Without vast supplies of wood from forests, the great civilizations of Sumer, Assyria, Egypt, Crete, Greece, Rome, the Islamic World, Western Europe, and North America would have never emerged. Wood, in fact, is the unsung hero of the technological revolution that has brought us from a stone and bone culture to our present age.Until the ascendancy of fossil fuels, wood was the principal fuel and building material from the dawn of civilization. Its abundance or scarcity greatly shaped, as A Forest Journey ably relates, the culture, demographics, economy, internal and external politics and technology of successive societies over the millennia. The Forest Journey was originally published in 1989 and updated in 2005. The book's comprehensive coverage of the major role forests have played in human life -- told with grace, fluency, imagination, and humor -- gained it recognition as a Harvard Classic in Science and World History and as one of Harvard's "One Hundred Great Books." Others receiving the honor include such luminaries as Stephen Jay Gould and E.O. Wilson. This is a foundational conservation story that should not be lost in the archives. This new, updated and revised edition emphasizes the importance of forests in the fight against global warming and the urgency to protect what remains of the great trees and forests of the world.

John Perlin is the author of four books: A Golden Thread: 2500 Years of Solar Architecture and Technology; A Forest Journey: A History of Trees and Civilization; From Space to Earth: The Story of Solar Electricity; and Let It Shine: The 6000-Year Story of Solar Energy. May Sarton on the Art of Living Alone "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

The people we love are built into us.

May Sarton on the Art of Living Alone

There is no place more intimate than the spirit alone, the young May Sarton (May 3, 1912July 16, 1995) wrote in her stunning ode to solitude the solitude she came to know, over the course of her long and prolific life, as the seedbed of creativity.

Living alone can be deeply rewarding and deeply challenging. It is not for everyone. It is not for those who romanticize its offerings of freedom and focus, but excise its menacing visitations of loneliness and alienation. It is not for those who find silence shattering. It is especially not for those who hunger for another consciousness to validate their experience and redeem their reality. It is only for the whole.

In her elder years, living alone on the coast of Maine and savoring a renaissance of creative energy after a long depression, Sarton returns to the subject of what solitude is and is not on the pages of her boundlessly rewarding journal The House by the Sea (public library).

Its Time to Rewrite the Canon of Women Artists "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

With the recent release of Katy Hessels The Story of Art Without Men (2023), I add another survey of women in Western art history to my bookshelf. It joins titles by Wendy Slatkin (Women Artists in History, 2000), Whitney Chadwick (Women, Art, and Society, 1990), Elsa Honig Fine (Women and Art, 1978), and a crop of similar projects from the golden age of gender lens revisionist art history: the 1970s. Despite the continued proliferation of these texts some revolutionary, others repetitive the landscape of womens art history (if such a category exists) is more varied than it ever has been.

The closest to a definitive survey text remains Chadwicks, which was revised and republished in its sixth edition in 2020. Although both The Story of Art Without Men and Women, Art, and Society cover the same ground, Chadwicks book is the more interesting and complex of the two, as it spends pages giving social and political context to the artists later discussed, in addition to including many minor characters that Hessel omits. A quick glance over the footnotes of The Story of Art Without Men makes it clear...

Amplifying Jewish Stories in the American South "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

When we think of the Jewish-American diaspora, our mind usually doesnt think of the South. That is Gods country more specifically, Jesus Christs. But that doesnt mean there arent thousands of Jews living in the region. Shoshana Gugenheim Kedem and Adam Carlin, co-directors of the Greensboro Contemporary Jewish Museum in North Carolina, are connecting with this community through social practice.

The museum, which doesnt have a brick-and-mortar headquarters, began in 2019 when Gugenheim Kedem was invited to become an artist in residence at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She worked within the small Jewish Studies Program, which connected her with students in the religious studies department, none of whom were Jewish themselves.

Still, Gugenheim Kedem started meeting other Jews in the college town, which boasts a population of about 3,000  a tiny community compared to the millions spread across New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco and decided that she wanted to launch a museum that celebrated this culture for her residency project.

Jewish museums get established in very large, Jewish metropolises, Kedem told me over Zoom. They would never, under normal circumstances, establish a Jewish museum in Greensboro, North Carolina.

With the maiden name of Gugenheim, but no relati...

Lets play a game. Can you spot the predator hiding in this photo? A trail camera set up by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (in 2019) captured an image of an elk as it grazes a rough terrain, not seeming to realize that a mountain lion is nearby. Its no wonder that the creature didnt notice the danger, as its extremely challenging to spot the mountain lion. Do you see it yet?

The photo, and the images before and after it, were captured at the Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. If it werent for an eagle-eyed volunteer reviewing the pictures, the mountain lion mightve gone completely unnoticed. But when they saw photos of the big cat directly following the event, they went back and took a look at the initial image and spotted the sneaky creature.

2,000-Year-Old Grave of Roman Doctor Unearthed in Hungary "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

The grave of a 1st-century CE doctor was recently discovered in the Jszsg region of Hungary. Archaeologists from the Budapest-based Etvs Lornd University, the Jsz Museum, and the Etvs Lornd Research Network announced that the recent excavation of the grave unearthed a skeleton and metal tools. The archaeologists believe the burial was for an itinerant Roman doctor in the early Imperial Period of the Roman Empire. At the feet of the burial were wooden boxes filled with a number of medical tools: pliers, needles, tweezers, scalpels, and drug residues. Near his knees was also a grinding stone that may have been used for crushing and mixing medicinal herbs for medications. The discovery is exciting in that it contributes to our broader knowledge of ancient medical tools. But can it also help us better understand the relationship between ancient doctors and metal artisans?

Man Pays $6,000 for a Pair of Damaged Stained Glass Windows That are Actually Worth a Fortune

Tiffany Windows at Auction in Philadelphia

Antique collector Paul Brown is used to looking for interesting collectibles, but he could never have anticipated what he'd find in an old church in Philadelphia. Brown usually deals with old advertising signs and gas station memorabilia, but when he came across two old stained glass windows on Facebook marketplace, his interest was piqued. They were sitting in the Hickman Temple A.M.E. Church, which is currently being converted into the Emmanuel Christian Center.

The Gothic revival church, built in 1901 as the St. Pauls Presbyterian Church, still held the round windows, which were cracked and covered in grim. Brown was asked if he wanted them before they were sledgehammered out. He gladly paid $6,000 for the pair and hired workers to remove the windows from the stone. Brown wasn't aware that the windows were of particular value but was attracted to them because they were round and big and they had purple in them. He figured that their shape, size, and color could bring in buyers.

Once the windows were taken out of the church, Brown brought them to Freeman's auction house for appraisal and was stunned by what he learned. The twin rose windows he'd purchased were actually created around 1904 by the famed Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company. Opened in 1885 by Louis Comfort Tiffany, they are perhaps most widely known for their stained glass Tiffany lamps.

In fact, Brown was mainly caught off guard by the news because he associated Tiffany with lamps, not windows. However, the firm made a wide range of stained glass items, including vases and windows. These particular windows were likely intended for an expansion of the church. A crown representing Christ sits at the center of one window, while a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit rests at the center of the second window.

Brendon Burton Captures Moments of Nostalgia and Wonder in North Americas Most Isolated Places "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

An aerial landscape photograph with a church in the foreground.

All images Brendon Burton, shared with permission

Growing up in an isolated community, photographer Brendon Burton developed an eye for the way decaying buildings nestle into the landscape or punctuate vast expanses. Now based primarily in Portland, Oregon, he travels around the U.S. in search of rural places that are culturally worlds apart from major urban centers, seemingly existing on their own timelines. Like his series Thin Placeshis recent body of work titled Intersticesto which some of these images belongemphasizes the notion of liminality, advancing time, and spaces for passing through.

Utilizing drones to achieve dramatic aerial views in addition to intimate perspectives shot from ground level, Burton highlights the relationships between the built environment and wilderness, ancestry and life cycles, and presence and local traditions. I recently visited the Deep South for the first time and documented Courir de Mardi Gras in a rural Cajun community in Louisiana, he says. This is an opinion editorial by Dennis Fassuliotis, founder of South Carolina Blockchain Inc. and co-founder of South Carolina Emerging Technology Association, Inc.

Why is the Buncombe County, North Carolina moratorium on Bitcoin mining so important?

Because they got caught.

There is a contagion running through Western North Carolina and this time, we know it was man made in a lab. It is called a moratorium on bitcoin mining. Its origins date back to August 2022 in Clay County, and Buncombe County has mutated it into this newest strain based on broadly construing a North Carolina zoning statute to authorize a development moratorium.

When properly used, North Carolinas development moratorium statute seeks to ensure that a new type of development does not proceed until changes to regulations or environmental issues are appropriately addressed. This allows for more effective planning and management of growth and development while minimizing potential negative impacts on the community.

Because a moratorium is a drastic restriction on property rights, the statute imposes conditions that an administrative authority must satisfy to get one. Even then, such a moratorium can only span a minimum of 61 days and a maximum of one year, as noted by the planning commissioner during a recent public briefing.

In this case, Buncombe County commissioners, under the direction of Planning Director Nathaniel Pennington, argued that they needed a one-year moratorium on cryptocurrency mining in the unincorporated areas of Buncombe County so they could study the industry and craft standards for the newly-defined use.

But we already have a workable definition for a bitcoin mine, as confirmed in my last opinion editorial, where I referred t.....

People Share Stories About Creepy Things Theyve Seen Other Families Do "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Theres nothing more unsettling when youre a kid than spending the night at a friends house and realizing that their family is justweird.

And it makes the whole night uncomfortable and it seems like itll never end

Ugh! Those memories are not pleasant.

And these memories from AskReddit users about weird families wont be pleasant either, but at least theyll be entertaining.

Lets take a look!

Whos hungry?

Growing up my best friends family didnt have traditional snacks like fruit rollups, gushers, etc.

They ate sticks of butter. Sticks of f**king butter. Whenever they offered me some, I always told them I wasnt hungry. They had multiple packages of butter in the fridge and freezer.

They didnt consume the entire stick; rather, they would cut off pieces. They werent poor, they werent fat, but they were fu**ing crazy.

Weird furs.

I was babysitting for a girl and noticed weird furs on her bed. She explained to me very matter-of-factly that they were her cats.

Her parents skinned her pet cats after they d**d (presumably of natural causes) and put the pelts on her bed. That was the only time I babysat for them.

Okay

My friends mom used to bust in on her daughters friends using the bathroom and quickly snap a picture.

She proudly showed me the photo album of random kids using the toilet looking surprised/confused as hell.

Didnt really kick in how f**ked-up that was until later in life.

Over and over again.

Something that I have witnessed for years only began to hit me as the realization slowly unfolded.

A family that I visited...

NYC Subway Guerrilla Art Demands Justice for Jordan Neely "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

On the morning of May 17, subway commuters crisscrossing Manhattans busy Broadway-Lafayette station were met with a message that was impossible to avoid. Activists covered the tiled wall between the uptown and downtown B/D/F/M train platforms with red paint and the words JUSTICE FOR JORDAN NEELY and ERIC ADAMS YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS, according to photos shared on Twitter and by the local publication Hell Gate.

Only weeks before, the subway junction was the murder site of Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old unhoused man known for his friendly persona and lively Michael Jackson subway performances. On May 1, while aboard the F train, another subway rider and ex-marine named Daniel Penny placed Neely in a lethal chokehold that led to his death. Last week, Penny was charged with second-degree manslaughter.

By 11am, the message had been washed off and only the red paint remained. Officers standing near the leftover paint declined to speak to Hyperallergic, but did state that the paint had been there for days.

Long Awaited Durham Report Confirms Suspicions "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Image result for John Durham

John Durham began his investigation while Bill Barr served as Donald Trumps Attorney General two years into the administrations term. Many people waited anxiously the results of Durhams report but for many it came too late. Durham, using unbiased and bi-partisan sources, unleashed a thorough investigation that revealed many things the Democrats would rather have covered up or that the public hopefully would forget about. As it turns out everything Trump confronted Biden during their debate was correct.

Image result for the corrupt press corps

Lies of the press corps

Of course, the sold out bought off mainstream media is already busy on damage control trying to say that Durhams report has a pro-Trump spin to it, but if one recalls Bill Barr betrayed President Trump after the stolen 2020 election saying that he saw no evidence of massive voter fraud and even laughed about it! Durham did not share that bias at all. Durhams findings confirm what most of us suspected or already knew, that the Democrats pulled off falsely fabricated evidence against Trump, that the Bidens have been profiting off China and the Ukraine, that the FBI was knowingly involved, that John Brennan of the CIA actually briefed the other heads of intelligence that a scheme hatched by Hillary Clinton was to be unveiled to influence the FISA Courts to allow surveillance of the Trump election campaign. They knew an illegal conspiracy was being unhatched and participated in it.

Nest of vipers

Within the federal government is a corrupt element dedicated not to justice or transparency but to perpetuating the power that goes to those with influence in major agencies. They are not out for the good of the American people. They are not out for the fair treatment of honest and hardworking public servants. They will act in such ways as to incriminate the innocent if they have to. They will destroy careers if it serves their purpose. They will conceal evidence and hide the truth anytime it suits them. In the case of Donald Trump who made his money outside the DC Beltway, who isnt on the public dole, he was an outsider, unwelcome, knowing too much about the Rigged system, and not a go along get along establishment player. That made him a target of constant lies by the mainstream media and attacks by the Democrats.

Through Otherworldly Graphite-and-Ink, Juliet Schrekinger Advocates for Protecting Endangered Species "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Seven rabbits in a range of sizes appear to float above the nighttime landscape

The Timekeepers. All images Juliet Schrekinger, shared with permission

Photography has an impulse for preservation, of cloistering the fleeting and saving it for future recollection. Artist Juliet Schrekinger references this act of protection in her ink-and-graphite works that evoke the grainy qualities of black-and-white film through a distinctly surreal vision.

Throughout her childhood, Schrekinger witnessed her mother taking countless photos of family events and happenings that were then displayed. I continually saw the greatest moments I shared with my loved ones framed in our home, colorless time capsules that I would turn to for years to come, the artist says. I began to feel a deep desire to recreate these sorts of time capsules in my work but wanted to incorporate scenes that did not occur in this world.

Mimicking the lighting and tonal contrasts of her mothers images, Schrekingers renderings fuse the anatomically accurate with the otherworldly. While many of her scenes are unearthlya pangolin wraps its long, scaly tail around the torso of a fox, sea birds perch upon a squids sinuous arms, and a band of hares appears to float through the skythe animals are depicted in exacting detail, and the likeness of their fur, feathers, and tentacles is the result of extensive research. I have traveled up and down both the east and west coast of the U.S., taking my own reference photos of birds, aquatic life, ocean environments, trees, and so much more that all ends up being used...

At Chlos Closet Sale "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

The line outside the Sale of the Century. Photograph by Sara Bosworth.

In the high noon heat of the big hot sun, the intersection of Broadway and Lafayette was an ouroboros. A snake eating its own tail, a snake that was not a snake at all but actually a line of mostly womenwho were nearly all young and definitely all well dressedwaiting to go inside a NoHo loft to go shopping. But okaythis was not some sort of run-of-the-mill sample sale. No one waiting in that line was there just because they were looking for a little something to do on a Sunday morning in May. These girls were in line because inside that loft was a woman named Chlo Sevigny. She was there because she was selling her clothes. These girls were waiting in line because the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow was Chlos stuff, at an event quite literally advertised, in the promotional materials, as the Sale of the Century.

It is not that insane to wait in that ouroboros of a line for three hours, when you think about it. Shes Chlo: Harmony Korines muse, wearing bleached eyebrows in the movie Gummo. The current month has, however, brought a surge in demand for Cosmos (ATOM), leading to a remarkable price performance. </p> <h2>Whats Ahead For Cosmos (ATOM)?</h2> <p>According to data, ATOM experienced a substantial price decline, reaching $10.73, a <a href= "https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/cosmos/" rel="nofollow">0.95% decrease</a> within the last 24-hour trading period.</p> <p>Related Reading: <a href= "https://www.newsbtc.com/news/will-dogecoin-doge-break-free-from-limbo-market-awaits-bullish-catalyst/?swcfpc=1"> Will Dogecoin (DOGE) Break Free From Limbo? More buyers and sellers are actively participating in trading ATOM. </p> <p>Also, an increase of more than 9% signifies potential price volatility, which might influence the price of ATOM. But the current market sentiment of ATOM is bearish as its <a href= "https://cfgi.io/atom-fear-greed-index/" rel="nofollow">Fear and Greed Index</a> shows 28, fear. </p> <p>This indicates a potential downtrend as investors and traders fear entering the market. Cosmos (ATOM) Technical Analysis

The 200-day and 50-day Simple Moving Averages (SMAs) currently exceed the ATOM/USDT trading pair price. This indicates that the market is on a bearish trend in longer and shorter timeframes.

Also, this means that the selling momentum is stronger than the buying. However, if the bulls increase the buying pressure, some price changes might occur in a few days.

Beautiful Mural in Belfast Tells a Story of Rebirth "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Beautiful Mural in Belfast Tells a Story of Rebirth

Belfast Mural by Studio Giftig

Dutch duo Studio Giftig made their way to Belfast for the annual Hit the North street art festival and left behind a stunning showcase of their talents. Niels van Swaemen and Kaspar van Leek worked together on a piece that paid homage to the history of the building on which it was painted. Belfast Spring is part of a new series where the pair surround their characteristic portraiture with flying objects as a way to soften the composition and add movement.

In the case of the Belfast mural, the duo was told that they would be painting on the side of an old linen mill. Looking to make a connection with this history, they painted a female figure surrounded by flax flowers, as linen is made from flax. Symbolically, the choice also made sense.

Flax is a flower of rebirth, just as the spring season is also a time of renewal. And Hit the Northnow in its 10th yearhas been a way to renew the city through art.

Created in cool shades of blue and light purple, the mural projects a calm, soothing aura. A soft light appears behind the woman at the center, as she glances off to the side serenely. Her hand clutches her scarf, as she appears ready to throw off the last shackles of winter and embrace the new season.

For Studio Giftig, the opportunity to paint for the community in Belfast, who greeted them warmly, was meaningful. We especially hope that the spectators of the image have a nice break from their daily routine, they say, and perhaps it can evoke a brief moment of wonder to inspire them.

Studio Giftig will be showing off more work done in this new style when their exhibition at Goldshteyn Saatort Gallery in Paris opens on June 8, 2023.

Belfast Spring is a new mural by Studio Giftig in Northern Ireland.

Italian Photographer Travels to Paris to Capture Perfect Full Moon Inside Arc de Triomphe "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Italian Photographer Travels to Paris to Capture Perfect Full Moon Inside Arc de Triomphe

Moon Centered in Arc de Triomphe by Stefano Zanarello

Photographer Stefano Zanarello has been practicing his craft for over 15 years from his home base in the Italian Alps. While his passion for photography began with wildlife, he's slowly spread his creative wings. And recently, he decided to make a journey to capture a photo he'd been working on for months. This required him to fly to Paris, and in the end he was able to get the shot he was afterthe Moon centered under the arch of Arc de Triomphe.

We've seen this composition before, but it never gets old. Zanarello, who spent months planning the image, gets the full Moon almost perfectly centered in the upper portion of the iconic monument. Full and clear, not even the headlights of oncoming traffic can detract from the Moon's beauty.  Using the PhotoPills app, Zanarello was able to not only determine the date that would work best for the photo, but also the exact position he needed to be in for the symmetry to work.

When all was said and done, Zanarello was not only pleased but also relieved. In this kind of photo, the window of opportunity, with the Moon in the correct position, is very shorta few of secondsbecause with the magnification given by the long focal length, the Moon moves quickly in the sky, he tells My Modern Met. So, before this photo, I was always feeling tense and nervous. I knew that if something went wrong, there wouldn't be a second chance.

Luckily, everything went to plan, and Zanarello's trip was a success. The photo has received nearly 3,000 likes on Instagram, bringing more eyes to the photographer's feed. Filled with images of northern Italian cities and mountainous landscapes, it's well worth a scroll once y...

It seems to be a story that constantly repeats itself over and over throughout the years, but theres no doubt that some children who become stars in the entertainment industry have to battle all kinds of demonsincluding the difficulties put upon them by their own parents.

Some of them come out of their experiences stronger and sadly, some succumb to the difficult years they had to endure when they were too young to know any better and end up as lessons for other kid stars.

Here are five child stars who opened up about the mistreatment they had to deal with from their own parents.

Taylor Momsen

The former star of Gossip Girl said that her parents signed her up for the Ford Modeling Agency when she was only two-years-old.

Momsen said, No 2-year-old wants to be working, but I had no choice. My whole life, I was in and out of school. I didnt have friends. I was working constantly and I didnt have a real life.

Sounds like a pretty sad childhood to me

Billions Of Dollars Tokenized Bitcoin Moved To Ethereum, BSC, And Solana "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

More than 70% of all tokenized Bitcoin, worth over $4.3 billion, have been transferred to Ethereum, according to data from Cryptoflows.

This migration highlights a growing trend of utilizing Bitcoin within Ethereums decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and other interesting areas.

Billions Of Bitcoin Being Tokenized

Out of the $5.75 billion worth of BTC exported from Bitcoin, over $1.44 billion found its way to the BNB Smart Chain (BSC) with more BTC tokens flowing to Avalanche, Fantom, and Solana.

Just like Ethereum, BSC, Avalanche, and other ecosystems where tokenized BTC found its way to, support smart contracting. Therein, holders can engage in DeFi, possibly earning income.

Bitcoin doesnt support smart contracts; explaining why some holders are tokenizing their assets. Still, while there appears to be growing demand for DeFi, reading from this outflow of BTC to smart contracting platforms, total value locked (TVL) and decentralized exchange (DEX) volumes have been low and even stagnant.

Data from DefiLlama.com, a DeFi analytics platform, shows that TVL is flat and below $50 billion.

Meanwhile, DEX trading volumes have been relatively low in recent months. This phase of decreased activity could suggest a temporary slowdown in decentralized trading, mirroring the general trend of crypto prices in recent months.

With less than $2 billion of registered DEX trading volumes on May 17, there has been a notable slump in activity over the last months, especially from early 2022.

In November 2021, at the peak of the last bull cycle, DEX trading volumes, on average, stood at over $7 billion.

BTC Prices Suppressed But Coin Is A Safe Haven

While users port their BTC to smart contracting platforms, Bitcoin prices remain under pressure partly due to regulatory decisions across the world, mainly in the United States and Europe.
