From charming street corners to horizons stacked with rooftops, artist Elora Pautrat creates windows into dreamy, ethereal worlds. Her portfolio of Japanese cityscapes and interiors depicts quiet corners of life where there are no people, allowing viewers to place them directly in a variety of beautiful, pastel-colored places.

Pautrat traces her love for sceneries to growing up in the French alps, which sparked a passion for capturing places over people and characters. When she discovered ukiyo-e, or Japanese woodblock prints, she resonated with its strong interest in portraying specific locales from new and interesting angles. This inspiration can be seen in Pautrat's own work in the way she focuses on unexpected small streets, unassuming little shops, and specific features that come with living in urban environments. These illustrations not only shine a light on these sleepy areas but celebrate their beauty.

In addition to the subject matter, Pautrat's color palette is another important element in her styleusing primarily pinks and blues. A lot of my color palette has its root in color therapy, so there are a lot of pastels, purples, blues. They have a soothing effect on you, Pautrat explains to My Modern Met. What started as very personal illustrations and photography work to help me relax and calm...

Fascinating Video Shows How Forearm Bones Twist To Make Everyday Actions Possible "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Fascinating Video Shows How Forearm Bones Twist To Make Everyday Actions Possible

Compelling Video Shows the Rotation of the Radius in a Forearm When Twisted

Photo: Screenshot from Reddit

The human body is simply amazing. While we might know how many bones we have or how the immune system fights off diseases, it's sometimes hard to grasp without seeing physical examples. A video shared by user ExpertAccident on Reddit showcases one of these mind-boggling actions. The footage features a medical model and demonstrates how the bones of the forearm move; specifically, how the radius rotates over the ulna when we twist our forearm.

The video draws the curtain on this motion, apparently simple and commonplaceyou may have done it a dozen times todayrevealing how the intricate bone structure operates for you to merely twist your arm. Just turning your hand upside down requires your bones to contort, doing so seamlessly and without causing you discomfort. To do so, the ulna (the straight bone on the little finger side of your forearm) stays in the same place while the radius (the curved bone on the thumb side) rotates around it.

The video got a lot of attention on Reddit thanks to the universality of the topic and the startling picture it paints of what happens inside our forearms with even the gentlest of movements. I definitely just did this motion with one arm while holding my phone in the other. Like 10 times, said one user, to which someone replied, And for some reason the bones feel more comfortable crossed right? I can't unfeel it now and it's making me uncomfortable. I'm not the only one right?.

People said they groped their arms trying to perceive the switch, or simply stated that it looked painful. However, not everyone can do this, so it's best to appreciate itno matter how weird it looks. So my bones are stuck' in the...

Luxurious Self-Sufficient Eco Lodge in Africa Is Designed To Give Back "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Luxurious Self-Sufficient Eco Lodge in Africa Is Designed To Give Back

MASK Architects - Baobab Luxury Safari

Italy-based design firm MASK Architects has created a unique eco-safari in Africa that will give back to the surrounding communities. Passionate about the fact that clean water should not be a luxury commodity, MASK Architects has designed modular lodges that produce its water supply using Air to Water technology. Visitors will be welcomed to the luxury resort knowing that their needs, as well as the needs of the local community, are being taken care of.

We envision our concept project to help the local communities in Africa that are remote and secluded from any infrastructure and amenities, MASK Architects shares. With this project, we want to help build infrastructure and community, agriculture, manufacturing, and water sourcing. We want to turn this into an experience where people from all over the world can come on a working holiday, to be able to give back to the community and help the local communities.

The Baobab Luxury Safari Resort is imagined as a self-sufficient community where facilities for agriculture will ensure that the needs of visitors will be met. Each lodge generates water and electricity from a transparent solar device that covers a glass curtain. Any excess produced will then be provided to the local community. Water is produced inside each lodge thanks to technology that extracts and condenses moisture in the air and transforms it into purified drinking water. The aim would be to produce enough water and electricity to be able to provide locals will these necessities.

From a design standpoint, the resort provides a luxurious camping experience. Each lodge is raised and nestled within the trees, providing a bird's eye view of the environment. The exterior structure is crafted from local beechwood to blend with the surroundings. On the lower level, a balcony wraps the conical lodge and acts as a feeding platform to interact with local wildlife. A sundeck located at the top of the lodge provides another perspective of the...

The platform launched on the Hedera network which allows all smart televisions running webOS 5.0 or the later versions to trade digital arts.

Users can buy and sell high-quality digital artwork on the Smart TV home screen. Also, the platform features LG Art Lab Drops to profile artists and preview new works intending to launch.

For now, the company hasnt said whether the Smart TV will accommodate other wallet apps besides LGs smartphone crypto wallet, Wallypto, which is also used on the Art Lab Marketplace.

Bakkt Streamlines Apex Crypto Platform By Removing 25 Tokens "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

In a recent development, the digital asset firm Bakkt delisted 25 tokens used in decentralized finance transactions from its trading platform, Apex Crypto. Bakkt acquired the platform in 2022 with 36 tokens, now 11 after the overhaul exercise.

According to the firm, its reasons for delisting the tokens was to follow up-to-date regulatory guidance.

25 Tokens Failed Bakkt Coin Listing Review Process

Bakkt performed its normal coin listing reviews, after which it removed 25 tokens from the platform.

A Bakkt representative said the company aims to protect its customers best interests. As such, the review process focuses on how to serve those interests based on the latest industry developments and up-to-date regulatory guidance.

As of press time, the firm hasnt released more details on the action. But the tokens were major ones that facilitated DeFi transactions.

These tokens include Aave (AAVE), Bancor Network Token (BNT), ApeCoin (APE), Basic Attention Token (BAT), Avalanche (AVAX), Cosmos (ATOM), Filecoin (FIL), Curve DAO (CRV), Chainlink (LINK).

Also, Compound Token (COMP), Enjin Coin (ENJ), Chiliz (CHZ), Fantom (FTM), GALA (GALA), Loopring (LRC), The Graph (GRT), Maker DAO (MKR), and Internet Computer (ICP) were delisted.

Other ones include Sushiswap (SUSHI), Uniswap (UNI), Synthetix (SNX), Yearn Finance (YFI), and Texos (XTZ).

This is not the first time Bakkt has made a major decision regarding its customer-oriented services. The firm shut down its retail app that supports crypto trading, gift cards, and loyalty rewards in February 2023.

At that time, the firm disclosed plans to focus on B2B technology solutions stating that it would offer crypto and loyalty rewards to businesses via API and SaaS solutions.

Artist Creates Intricate Metal Armor for Cats and Mice Inspired by World History "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

Artist Creates Intricate Metal Armor for Cats and Mice Inspired by World History

Cat armor made from metal inspired by chinese history

Dragon Cat

The rivalry between cats and mice is as old as time. Can you picture seeing historical artifacts related to their feud, just like you would in a museum? A Canadian artist's work gets pretty close to that. Jeff de Boer creates exquisitely detailed metal armor for cats and mice inspired by ancient cultures and historical periods. From samurai felines to Viking rodents, what started as a tiny student project led him to become one of the fewif not the onlyanimal armorer out there.

De Boer traces his love of armor back to over 40 years ago when he was in high school. I have had a lifetime fascination with history, archeology, museums, and of course armor, he tells My Modern Met. When I was a second-year jewelry student at what is now called AUArts in 1986 I realized that I could make a very small suit of armor. The idea of making a human miniature did not seem right to me but making a life-size suit for something like a mouse did!

That's why, contrary to many artists, his inspiration doesn't come from galleries or the work of fellow creators. My inspiration comes more from the world of museums and artifacts, de Boer explains. I think of my work as modern museum-quality artifacts that one day will be at home in either an art gallery or a museum. I hope one day my work will inspire others to want to become artist makers in the same way the work of past artisans inspired me.

His love for the blacksmith craft, as well as history, permeates every piece. Researching historical armor from every culture and time is fascinating for me, the artist says. Sometimes I get inspired by a style and just start working on it and then offer it to the public. Other times a client will make a special request. For example, the Maratha Hussar mouse is a fusion of the styles of both the Maratha Empire from India and the Polish Winged Hussars. This design was for a couple; one from India and the other from Poland. Some of the best ideas are a collaboration between myself and a...

The 2024 Presidential Election Could Make Or Break Bitcoin In The U.S. "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

This is an opinion editorial by Robert Hall, a content creator and small business owner.

The race for the 2024 U.S. presidential election is starting to kick into gear, featuring some of the same cast of characters from the last few elections. On the Democratic side, you have Joe Biden, Robert F. Kennedy and Marianne Williamson suggesting they will run. Then, Former President Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy are on the other side of the aisle.

If you have been following the race so far, you might know that Trump seems to be walking away with the nomination before the process even starts next year. If he ends up being the nominee, we will likely get a re-run of 2020, where we have two men over 70 years old who both think that they know what is right for the country. Who else is tired of having baby boomers running the show? I am, to be honest.

Boomer Presidents Dont Understand Bitcoin

Baby boomers, youve had their time in the sun. Its time to leave the stage and let the younger generations of leaders have a chance to lead the country. We need leaders who understand the emerging challenges facing America as we speak.

We need leaders who thoroughly understand economic policy and the value of innovation in the financial space. For instance, the baby boomers at the top of the ticket dont have the depth or the capacity to understand the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that Bitcoin presents to America and the American people.

Biden and Trump have been openly hostile...

The Lion of Chaeronea "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Current fiction reading is The Slynx by Tatyana Tolstaya, translated from the Russian by Jamey Gambrell (NYRB Classics). Its a viciously funny post-apocalyptic satire, set 200 years in the future in what was once Moscow, now home to all manner of mutants created by a nuclear war. The best analogy I can offer is John Wyndhams The Chrysalids if it had been rewritten by Kurt Vonnegut. I wasnt sure whether this would be my cup of tea when I began it, but so far its incredibly compelling.

PayPal Plunging Despite Increasing Crypto Holdings "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

PayPal share prices are plunging and currently down 80% from 2021 peaks; the largest draw down ever, market data on May 12 shows. PYPL closed the week at $61.69, down 3% from Thursday, March 11.

PayPal Shares Crumbling

Analysts observe that the decline in PayPals stock price has also resulted in a notable shift in its price-to-sales (P/S) ratio.

Previously at a record high of 17x, the P/S ratio is now at a record low of 2.5x.

The P/S ratio is a financial metric, which evaluates a companys valuation, and compares its market capitalization to its total revenue over a specific period, typically a year.

The P/S ratio offers valuable insights into how the market perceives a companys revenue generation relative to its size. The ratio focuses on the rise and fall of the companys revenue.

This ratio also signifies the amount investors are willing to pay for every dollar of the companys revenue.

To put it into perspective, PayPals previous P/S ratio of 17 implies that investors are willing to pay $17 for every $1 of revenue generated by the company. Now, investors are only willing to pay $2.5 for every $1 revenue.

Paypal shares are still at a premium. A P/S ratio above 1 indicates that investors are still willing to pay a premium for the companys revenue.

While the exact reasons behind PayPals downturn are not explicitly stated, speculation suggests that the company is facing a combination of intense competition and outdated technology. PayPal is one of the oldest payment processors.

As the online payment landscape is constantly evolving, it has become increasingly challenging for PayPal to wade off competitors.

For instance, banks have incorporated new systems such as Zelle. Besides, the Federal Reserve is rolling out FedNOW. There are also other avenues for users to use cryptocurrencies or even networks such as XRPL by Ripple Labs.

Some users have even compared PayPals level of innovation to what it was in 1999 when Western Union was its primary competition.

Litecoin (LTC) Records Spike In Active Addresses Following Launch of LTC-20: Santiment "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Popular Bitcoin hard fork and one of the earliest cryptocurrencies, Litecoin (LTC), have recorded some interesting network activity in recent times. According to data from the on-chain analytics platform, Santiment, the number of daily active network addresses on Litecoin has increased by over 400,000 since the start of May.

However, Litecoin has only experienced a slight increase in its transaction volume during the same period, which is unusual considering the significant rise in its daily active addresses. Analyzing this network activity, Santiment released a detailed report on the factors behind such development.

Litecoin

LTC-20 Standard Drives Rise In Litecoin Micro Addresses

According to Santiment, the majority of new active addresses on Litecoin are the most miniature set of wallets on the network holding between 0-0.001 LTC. This explains the little increase in trading volume despite the rising number of daily addresses.

Behind this gain in micro wallets, Santiment postulates the recent introduction of the LTC-20 token standard to be the primary driving force. This is based on chart data which shows that this exciting rise in the 0-0.001 LTC wallets began after the launch of the LTC-20 standard on May 2.

Litecoin

According to its official Gitbook page, LTC-20 is referred to as an experimental standard for non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

While providing an introduction to this blockchain product, the page author stated;

this is an extremely dynamic experiment, and I strongly discourage any financial decisions to be made on the basis of its design. I do, however, encourage the Litecoin community to tinker with standard designs and optimizations until a general...

Former Executive Backs Up Lawsuit Against FTX Celebrity Promoters "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

A former FTX regulatory officer, Daniel Friedberg, has come forward to back the lawsuit against FTX celebrity promoters, adding weight to the allegations leveled against the cryptocurrency exchange.

Due to his knowledge of the companys internal compliance practices, Friedbergs decision to support the legal action is a significant blow to FTX.

Notably, the lawsuit started mid-November last year, a few days after the exchange shut down.

FTX Lawsuit Gains Support From Former Executive

As revealed in the proposed amended complaint, Friedberg gave evidence that FTX promotional activity surfaced from Florida.

Daniel Friedberg was the compliance chief of the US arm of FTX and FTXs chief regulatory officer.

So, his evidence could negate the defendants claims, stating that FTXs activity has no connection with Florida, including the Miami court.

Friedberg also referred to the vice president of the US arm of FTX, Avinash Dabir, noting that he is based in Miami. He added that Dabir performed operations in the city from an FTX office in 2021.

He said that Dabir was responsible for overseeing FTX brand ambassadors, of which the court defendants are no exception.

The brand ambassadors noted were comedian Larry David, Shaquille ONeal, a former basketball player, retired NFL player Tom Brady, and FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried.

Other celebrity promoters include entrepreneur Kevin OLeary, Steph Curry, a basketball star, with his team, the Golden State Warriors, and Bradys ex-wife, model Gisele Bundchen.

Meanwhile, the class action lawyers saw that Friedbergs statements countered the defendants claims.

They claimed its unlikely for such a conspiracy to erupt from Florida because the exchange did not intend to expand to Miami until September last year. It was after the move to Miami that they enacted the promotional agreements.

In the meantime, the lawsuit class action lawyers are assessing the new evidence from the defendants to amend the case.

Celebrities Face Lawsuits For Misleading Crypto Endorsements

Crypto Analysts Predict XRP Price Rally Against BTC "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Market analysts are watching Ripples XRP for a potential price surge against the worlds leading digital currency, Bitcoin.

XRP, known for its lightning-fast transaction speed and secure blockchain technology, has recently experienced a rollercoaster ride due to its lawsuit with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

However, an XRP and BTC chartist, Cryptoes, predicts a trend reversal for XRP based on current indicators on the chart.

Analysts See A Pump In XRP Price Against Bitcoin

The performance of XRP since the beginning of April has been very low compared to that of Bitcoin. This led to a notable decline in the XRP/BTC pair over the last five weeks.

Its poor performance does not affect how certain analysts picture the token. The positive view of XRPs price can be attributed to a key support level at its current position.

Cryptoes called crypto enthusiasts attention to this occurrence in a tweet, revealing that the weekly chart of the XRP/BTC pair projects a major support level. The chart revealed that XRPs price had slowed against Bitcoins since April 3.

However, the support level could prevent further decline of XRP tokens as it might be the bottom point. He added that the token might consolidate for weeks before initiating a rally.

Another popular crypto analyst, Egrag, has a different view from Cryptoes. According to him, the market currently projects a bearish trend.

His reason is hinged on the movements of two Simple Moving Averages (SMA), the 20 and 100 moving averages on the same chart.

According to Egrag, the 20 Simple Moving Averages (SMA) place sell pressure on the coins price. As such, the 100-moving average is a strong resistance against the current price of XRP. It could be difficult for the token to break out from such resistance.

He believes that the presence of these indicators signals market weakness, and XRP could yield to them. But time will tell if XRP will pump to close above the falling wage.

XRPs Recent Price Performance

There is no significant difference between XRPs price at the beginning of May and its current price of $0.4286. On May 1, the coin was trading around the $0.47 price mark, which eventually declined to $0.465 at the close of the day.

OKX Announces New Platform And Partnerships; OKB Shows No Significant Movement "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

OKX Wallet has announced the launch of its new platform, Cryptopedia, and its partnership with protocols, Radiant and Marinade. This announcement would come following wide discussions about the waning influence of Binance, the worlds largest cryptocurrency exchange.

OKX Launches Cryptopedia; Partners With Radiant And Marinade

In a GlobeNewswire press release dated May 13th, 2023, OKX Wallet disclosed the launch of Cryptopedia, a Web3 learn-to-earn and airdrop platform. This new platform aims to help users easily identify and access Web3 projects and dApps. Cryptopedia will also enable users to unlock additional airdrops and gain extra rewards.

The first Cryptopedia issue, which is focused on the zkSync theme, provides users with the opportunity to receive zkSync airdrops and other related airdrops. Users will also have the chance to collect non-fungible tokens jointly created by OKX Wallet and zkSync.

zkSync is a Layer-2 scaling solution designed to enhance transaction speed and reduce cost on the Ethereum network. As the name suggests, this protocol is based on the zero-knowledge (zk) concept.

In the press release, OKX Wallet also announced its partnership with two protocols, namely Radiant and Marinade. Its collaboration with Radiant, a decentralized lending protocol native to Arbitrum and BNB Chain, will allow users to access Radiants lending service via the OKX Wallet plug-in and Discover platform.

With Radiant, users are able to borrow a variety of digital assets across multiple chains against their own assets on one chain.

Marinade, on the other hand, is a non-custodial liquid staking derivatives (LSD) protocol on the Solana network. Similar to Radiant, this partnership will facilitate users access to Marinades liquidity staking service via the OKX Wallet plug-in and Discover platform.

OKB Shows No Significant Price Action

The OKB coin is the utility token of the OKX ecosystem. From trading fee discounts to passive income, there are a few benefits that holders of this token get to enjoy. And it appears that the growth of the OKX ecosystem has some links to OKB price.

That said, it is somewhat too early to tell what the impact of these partnerships will be on the price of OKB. Moreover, there has been no significant price movement in the OKB market since the announcement was made.

Crypto VCs Dabble In $2.6 Billion Worth Of Deals In Q1 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Despite the prevailing bearish trend in the crypto market, venture capital firms consummated several deals worth billions in the first quarter of 2023.

Data from PitchBooks Crypto Report for Q1 2023 disclosed that crypto firms generated $2.6 billion through 353 investment rounds.

Though the level of deals from the companies indicated the viability of the crypto space, theres still evidence of its weakness.

Report Highlights Declines In The Number And Value Of Investment Deals

According to the report, the first quarter of 2023 had the lowest amount of capital invested in the crypto space since 2020.

The total deals declined by 12.2% from the last quarter, while the quarter-on-quarter deal value dropped by 11%.

The report highlighted that Q1 2023 marks the fourth consecutive quarter of dipping investment activity for VCs.

Notably, the number and value of VCs deals decreased by 64.4% and 78.0%, respectively, from the same quarter in 2022.

Further, the report indicated a mix in the valuation trends. Seed and late-stage rounds grew by 33.3% and 209.2%, respectively, compared with the full year of 2022. But early-stage rounds plummeted by 16.7% during the same period.

Also, the report noted that the crypto bearish trend could continue. But the space still has some positive outlooks currently.

For instance, layer 2 scaling solutions have been doing great, maintaining their growth from last year.

The data highlighted a blockchain-based firm, Blockstream, that raised $125 million for funding a Bitcoin mining infrastructure.

Also, another company committed to developing zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine scaling solutions, Scroll, has done well. The firm raised $50 million in a late-stage VC round.

Overall Decline In The Crypto Market

The crypto market has continued to show red charts as prices of most assets witness more losses. Subsequently, the cumulative crypto market cap declined over the past 24 hours. Also, the total crypto market volume plummeted 8.10% within the past 24 hours to $42.75 billion.

The primary crypto asset Bitcoin has been struggling within the past few days. According to data from CoinMarketCap, Bitcoins price has continuously declined for the past week.

The token dropped from the $29,000 region to the $26,000 level. The seven-day price action shows that BTC plummeted by over 9%.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at $26,759 after losing minor gains over the past 24 hours. Its market cap now sits at $511 billion, with a market dominance of 46.30%.

Polkadot (DOT) Price: The Bear Vs. Bull Battle Continues Wholl Take The Beating? "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Since the beginning of this year, Polkadot has been on a roller coaster ride as the general cryptocurrency market has fluctuated over the past months.

Recently, the price of Polkadot (DOT) has experienced negative sentiment, causing a slight decline in the coins value.

The coins price slightly decreased from $5.51 to $5.12 on May 9, 2023. However, it started to gain further positive momentum the same day and recovered to $5.3 today.

Strong Bearish Momentum

The price of DOT has been trading sideways within the last 24 hours, indicating a bearish trend. As a confirmation of the bearish momentum in the Polkadot market, the 24-hour trading volume is down by 18%.

The decline indicates a decrease in demand for DOT in the market and might lead to greater volatility as traders adjust their position based on the market sentiment.

Polkadots current market cap is estimated at $6.1 billion, with a market dominance of 0.56%. But the increase in selling pressure has impacted the price of Polkadot significantly.

Polkadot is in the phase where investors and traders are afraid to buy or hold the coin. As investors take advantage of the current dip in price to acquire more DOT, anticipate a modest recovery in the coming week.

Polkadot (DOT) Technical Analysis

DOT trades below its 200-day and 50-day Simple Moving Averages (SMA). This indicates that DOT has a bearish momentum in both long-term and short-term trends.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicator shows that DOT currently reads 32.92. This indicates that the coin is slightly in the oversold region. It also suggests that DOT is experiencing some downward pressure. However, the asset may rebound from its oversold condition and return to a normal trading range.

The MACD indicator also confirms the bearish trend as its trading below the signal line. This indicates that the bears have more pressure than the bulls.

Recent Development In Polkadot Ecosystem

Meanwhile, the number one gaming blockchain platform, Mythical Games, is departing from the Ethereum network to launch its new Mythos ecosystem on Polkadot.

The recent development will allow Mythos gaming partners to build the biggest and most connected gaming ecosystem in the Web3 industry.

The development will result in a new scalable platform, accessible to all Mythos partners and compliant with Web2 gaming platforms, including the Epic Games Store.

Jacques Privat: Mysteries of the Far North "IndyWatch Feed Uncanny"

Presents evidence of early Norse settlement in Greenland and North America

Explores in depth how Greenland and its surroundings were inhabited for nearly 5 centuries by two Nordic colonies, Vestri-bygd and Eystri-bygd

Shares extensive evidence from the still-living indigenous oral tradition of the Far North as well as surviving sculptural art to show how the Vikings and the Inuit formed a harmonious community

Examines ancient maps and other cartography, such as the 15th-century Martin Behaim globe, as well as explorers records of their voyages

Sharing his extensive and meticulous research, Jacques Privat reveals that the Vikings were in Greenland, its neighboring islands, and the eastern shores of Canada long before Columbus. He examines in depth how Greenland and its surroundings were inhabited for nearly five centuries by two Nordic colonies, Vestribyg and Eystribyg, which disappeared mysteriously: one in 1342 and the other in the 16th century. Drawing on the still-living indigenous oral tradition of the Far North, as well as surviving sculptural art carvings, he shows how, far from being constantly at odds with the native population, the Norsemen and the Inuit formed a harmonious community. He reveals how this friendly Inuit-Viking relationship encouraged the Scandinavian settlers to forsake Christianity and return to their pagan roots.

Working with ancient European maps and other cartography, such as the 15th-century Martin Behaim globe, as well as explorers records of their voyages, the author examines the English, Irish, German, Danish, Flemish, and Portuguese presence in the Far North. He explores how Portugal dominated many seas and produced the first correct cartography of Greenland as an island. He also reveals how Portugal may have been behind the disappearance of the Vikings in Greenland by enslaving them for their European plantations.

Dispelling once and for all the theories that the Inuit were responsible for the failure of the Scandinavian colonies of the Far North, the author reveals how, ultimately, the Church opted to cut all ties with the settlementsrather than publicize that a formerly Christian people had become pagan again. When the lands of the Far North were officially discovered after the Middle Ages, the Norse colonies had vanished, leaving behind only legends and mysterious ruins.

Jacques Privat holds a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne and works as a translator of Scandinavian languages. In addition to his degrees from the Sorbonne and the Arctic Center of Paris, he has studied at INALCO in Paris, the Greenland Art School, and the Institut for Eskimologi in Copenhagen, Denmark. He lives in Paris.

Scary smart.

My father. A wife-beating criminal, cocaine addict, full of steroids and anger issues. He showed up at my little sisters house last January and threatened her for money.

But the dangerous part is that hes scary smart. Gotta give credit where credit is due, that guy is not stupid and thats what makes him all the more dangerous.

Theres very few people Im genuinely afraid of, but hes one of them.

Youve gotta look out for yourself.

U.S. Senators Introduce Bill Requiring Reports On El Salvadors Bitcoin Adoption "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

A group of United States senators have introduced a bill requiring reports on the adoption of bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador.

The "Accountability for Cryptocurrency in El Salvador Act," introduced by Senator James Risch, Senator Bob Menendez, and Senator Bill Cassidy, requires the Secretary of State, in coordination with other relevant Federal departments and agencies, to submit a report on the adoption of bitcoin as legal tender in El Salvador. The report must include an assessment of the regulatory framework in El Salvador and the potential impact of Bitcoin adoption on macroeconomic stability, democratic governance, and the flow of remittances from the United States to El Salvador.

The bill also calls for a plan to mitigate any potential risks to the United States financial system posed by the adoption of a cryptocurrency as legal tender in El Salvador and any other country that uses the U.S. dollar as legal tender. According to the bill, the plan should be submitted to the appropriate committees of Congress no later than 90 days after the report required by subsection (a).

The Bitcoin Law, passed by the Salvadoran government in June 2021, gives Bitcoin legal tender status in the country. The move was criticized by some experts, who argued that it could lead to instability in the country's economy. Others, however, saw the move as a potential catalyst for broader adoption of bitcoin in the region. Despite the controversy surrounding the move, El Salvador has remained committed to its Bitcoin adoption plans.

Gemini Season Horoscopes May-June 2023 "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

Gemini Season runs from May 21st until June 21st. Gemini is represented by the twins. One twin is mortal, the other immortal, representing both body and soul. The mortal twin is our reminder that life is temporary and that we are here for a physical experience, whereas the immortal twin reminds us that our soul is forever and we are spiritual beings by nature.

Gemini is also connected to the element of air and the planet Mercury, so during the Season, energy tends to be concentrated in our minds. Our thoughts can be more powerful but also more consuming. We may find ourselves having brainwaves, moments of clarity, or even ah-ha moments. Just the same, we can find ourselves fixated, overthinking, or being too self-critical.

Gemini is also a very social energy, encouraging us to get out and mix with others, communicate, and share our story. We may even feel guided to put pen to paper or start that podcast.

Some key events for Gemini Season 2023, include the Aldebaran Gateway from May 28-29, the Sagittarius Full Moon on June 3rd, Venus move into Leo on June 5-6th, Plutos return into Capricorn on June 11th, the Gemini New Moon on June 17th, and Saturn Retrograde on June 17th.

Metropolitan Opera House. Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons, Licensed under CCO 4.0.

In Ben Lerners Leaving the Atocha Station, the narrator, Adam, goes to the Prado every morning to stand in front of the Flemish painter Rogier van der Weydens The Descent from the Cross. On one particular morning, another man is standing in his place, looking at the painting, and this man suddenly bursts into tears. Adam is irritated and confused: I had long worried that I was incapable of having a profound experience of art and I had trouble believing that anyone had, at least anyone I knew. I too have worried about this; a painting has never moved me to tears. A poem has never changed my life. This is why the opera came to me as a surpriseboth my love of it and the fact that, the first time I saw La Bohme, I cried through the whole fourth act. The pathos! I was deeply moved by the tragic story and by the register of the musical spectacle, but it was something more primal, too. Here was an art form that seemed not to shy from melodrama but move into its absolute depths, and then transcend and transform them.

I love opera not as an expert, or even as an informed connoisseur. I love it as an amateur, a near-total beginner. And despite its reputation, I think opera is surprisingly accessible, in part because of its absolute embrace and elevation of human feeling. Im sure that as I spend more time in the Family Circle seats at the Met, I will learn more, and I might even become discerning. But for now I am going for pure pleasure.

Alternative Building to Address Homelessness "IndyWatch Feed Diy"

The four houses shown above are completely different in size and style, but they are all environmentally friendly, cheap, and fast to construct because they are made with earthbags. The four earthbag dwellings above are, clockwise from top left, in Veracruz, Mexico, Capetown, South Africa, Ahwaz, Iran and Durban, South Africa.

Many countries with urgent housing needs are constructing low-cost houses using a range of alternative building materials, such as bamboo, plant fiber board, synthetic concrete, papercrete, rammed earth, old shipping containers, rubber tires, reclaimed timber and glass and plastic containers.

The home below is made of used plastic bottles and other recycled waste. This is one of many innovations of Earthship Biotecture, based in New Mexico, USA. These dwellings feature solar and wind power for heating, cooling and other energy needs plus self-contained sewage treatment.

Australians are now facing the challenge of alternative housing with more urgency than has been shown in the past because of high rates of homelessness. Last month, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that 122,500 Australians were homeless on Census night in August 2021. That was 480 for every 100,000 in the population. The remote Indigenous communities are where alternative housing solutions will be most strategic.

On any given day, there are millions of people across the world who are battling cancer. According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, there were 18.1 million cancer cases recorded in 2020. Though it is a battle faced by many, it is nonetheless a scary, painful, and tiring experience for patients and their families. Going through rounds of chemo, is yet another struggle in the quest for health. It is physically and mentally draining. One common side effect of this treatment that can take a toll on one's self-esteem is hair loss. This can be particularly hard for women, as many consider their hair not only part of their image, but a key part of their femininity as well. That's why any show of support can mean the world for someone in this situation. In Brazil, a woman named Claudia had to say goodbye to her hair, so she paid a visit to her son's barber shop to get her head buzzed by experienced and loving hands. As she faced that challenging moment, she came across an unlikely and heartwarming display of solidarity.

Claudia had been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer a few years ago, and she recently had to resume treatment. When she decided to have her head buzzed, she knew it was best to have it done by her son, Guilherme Magalhaes. The strike started the day after the previous contract expired, when talks about pay and streaming residuals, among other issues, fell apart. The effect of the strike was immediately felt, as late-night talk shows began showing repeats, and the MTV Movie & TV Awards canceled the live portion of its show after host Drew Barrymore and other presenters backed out in solidarity.

Strikes in Hollywood aren't uncommon, and this is the eighth WGA strike since the 1950s. The last one, which started in late 2007, lasted 100 days and guaranteed that writers would have a stake in revenue when their content hit the internet. The rapid change in how we consume media is also at the heart of this strike, as streaming residuals have been a major sticking point.

The strike has made headlines around the country and has even made its way into the classroom. As shared by film and tv writer Tyler Ruggieri, one sixth-grade class in Los Angeles has learned all about the strike and wanted to send their support.

Iranians Forced to Remove Hijab-Free Photos from Graves "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

With many Iranians pushing back against the mandatory hijab laws implemented by the Islamic Republic, it seems the Islamic Republic will continue pushing women to wear hijabs, even after their death.

The Iranian government forced a family in Kermanshah, west of Iran, to remove the picture of their deceased daughter from her tombstone because she was not wearing a hijab.

The municipal government of Kermanshah said the family signed a letter of commitment, promising that they would not put pictures of their daughter without a hijab, but unfortunately, this family did not comply with the regulations and must replace it as soon as possible.

The warning was in accordance with an intensified move to enforce the Islamic Republics dress code more strictly in all public and private life aspects, including cemeteries. Last year, Iran started implementing this measure in the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery, the countrys largest cemetery near the capital Tehran.

The cemetery removed hundreds of gravestones that had pictures showing women without hijabs. Saeed Ghazanfari, the cemetery director, said the procedure would continue in the future "in accordance with the opinion of [religious] scholars until all tombstones showing hijab-less pictures are removed.

Beard Ban Backlash: Muslim Security Guard Sues US State Department "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

A lawsuit was filed against the State Department of the US government for discriminating against a guard when he was allegedly forced to shave his beard to keep his job at the agency.

The case was filed on May 3rd by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on behalf of security guard Devin Brooks against the US State Department and State Secretary Anthony Blinken. The suit stated that the agency denied permission to maintain a beard longer than inch, as required by Brooks Islamic faith.

Brooks also reported that he was shocked when the US State Department informed him that his fist-length beard violated the agencys policy on facial hair since a third-party recruiter told him that the job would let him keep his beard.

According to the lawsuit, Brooks was removed from active duty before being placed on administrative and unpaid leave. CAIR claimed that their refusal to give religious accommodation violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, prohibiting discrimination on employment based on religion.

The lawsuit asks for payment for economic and emotional damages incurred by the incident and other fees.

Nobody should be forced to choose between their faith and their job, Hannah Mullen, a staff attorney for CAIR, said in a press release. The Department of State could have easily accommodated Mr. Brooks. Bureaucracy and a lack of respect for religion are not defenses to Title VII and RFRA.

The US State Department did not provide any comment on the pending litigation. However, in a letter dated April 18 last year quoting the lawsuit, a representative from the agency said the State Department couldnt accommodate Brookss request to keep his beard due to safety concerns.

We have these policies on beard length in place to protect the guards and to ensure that if engaged in a physical conf...

By Imprinting an Ornate Rug in Snow, Javier de Riba Draws Attention to Flora and Fauna Living in the Pyrenees "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

The snowy Pyrenees landscape imprinted with an ornate motif

All images Javier de Riba

Catalan artist Javier de Riba (previously) once again collapses the boundaries between public and private, this time by adding a cozy intervention to a frigid environment. Canal Roya imprints a swath of fresh snow with the artists signature ornate motifs to mimic a rug-like covering on the frozen landscape.

Completed in early April, de Riba created the work near the proposed location of an 8-kilometer cable car connecting ski resorts in Astn and Formigal. The project, which drew criticism for its enormous price tag and disastrous environmental effects, would likely have displaced many of the animals, plants, and other organisms that inhabit that region in the Pyrenees. Thanks to pushback from activists, though, construction has since been halted.

Report Finds UK's Forced Marriage Unit Overly Targets Muslims "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

A sweeping new report by the UK governments faith adviser has been published, making it the most comprehensive review of the relationship between the British government and the countrys many religious organizations in more than a generation.

The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, headed by Secretary Michael Gove, unveiled the new report. Colin Bloom, the former head of the Conservative Christian Fellowship who serves as the current faith adviser of the Conservative government, drafted the review.

Michael Gove became controversial last 2022 when he dropped plans to officially define Islamophobia despite mounting pressure for the government to act on hate crimes against Muslims, along with scandals unwrapping Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.

Commissioned by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2019, the 165-page report emphasized various issues and areas where government officials became ineffective, partly because they were too cautious about tackling problems that emerged from religious communities.

Some of the issues highlighted by Blooms report include forced marriages, which had become a problem across many religious communities. However, the report slammed the government agency set up to tackle this concern.

Bloom described the governments forced marriage unit as under-resourced and p...

Shocking Violence: 6 Dead, 25 Churches Burned in India "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

New violence against two ethnic groups sparked in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, reportedly killing 54 people, displacing 23,000 more, and burning at least 25 churches, reigniting tensions that terrorized the state for decades.

Thousands of soldiers have been sent to Manipur to quell the unrest, which emerged from a protest by the Kuki tribal group in the Churachandpur district against plans to designate the more dominant Meitei tribe as a scheduled tribe.

Aside from sending military units to the state, the army said it significantly enhanced its surveillance of areas affected by the violence by deploying helicopters and drones. Authorities also imposed an Internet blackout throughout Manipur, enforced a curfew in nine of the 16 districts, and issued shoot-at-sight orders in extreme cases to stamp out unrest in the region.

N. Biren Singh, Manipurs chief minister, said the conflict arose due to a prevailing misunderstanding between two communities and added that the government pledged to protect the lives and property of all our people.

We should not allow the culture of communal...

Man Leaves a Job Interview and Rescues a Baby in a Runaway Stroller, Lands the Job Soon After

Man Saves Baby From Incoming Traffic

Photo: Screenshot from YouTube

Ron Nessman had just finished an interview at Applebees when he saw something terrifying unfolding. A baby in a stroller was rolling toward traffic, and the person trying to save the child was unable to catch up with the buggy. Thats when Nessman lept into action, sprinting towards the stroller and narrowly saving the baby before tragedy could happen.

The entire event was captured on surveillance footage. It shows the woman with the stroller realizing the baby is rolling away and immediately trying to catch up with the child. But as she reaches toward the handle, she falls and cannot get up. Thats when Nessman swoops in, stopping the stroller and letting the woman know everything is okay.

Nessman was in the right place at the right time to make the miracle happen. He was sitting on a bench outside of the A1 Hand Car Wash in Hesperia, California, after his interview with the restaurant. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I did nothing, he explained of the event.

A few days after the miraculous save, Nessman got the call that he landed the position of dishwasher at Applebees. The restaurants general manager said that the man earned it all on his own. But if his willingness to act is any indication of his integrity, its no surprise he was offered the job.

For Nessman, this represents a new start. He is a former truck driver who experienced homelessness after his girlfriend died in 2018. His move to Hesperia is him turning over a new leaf, and Applebees is part of that fresh start.

Whats standing in the way of an Israel-Gaza ceasefire? Israel wants to keep breaking intl law "IndyWatch Feed Spiritual"

by Kathryn Shihadah,

Israels unprovoked attack on Gaza should never have started and now it wont end because Israel clings to its desire to violate international law indefinitely.

The Jerusalem Post reported today that ceasefire negotiations are stalled because Israel refuses to give in to two demands from Gazan resistance leaders demands that would require Israel to abide by international law. Gazas Islamic Jihad insists that Israel end its policy of assassinating Palestinian resistance leaders, and return the body of Khader Adnan, who died in an Israeli prison last week after an 86-day hunger strike. Israel has killed about 24 Palestinians in Gaza since May 9, the majority of them civilians. The first attack came in the middle of the night as Islamic Jihad leaders slept in their homes, killing 3 military leaders and family members 4 women and 4 children along with civilian neighbors. Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq pointed out:
This deliberate and premeditated act underscores the fact that the killing of Palestinian families and children is not a mere oversight but rather a carefully calculated one, and is part of a systemic policy.

International law on assassination

Foreign Policy explains that the 1907 Hague Convention, the 1998 Rome Statute, and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights forbid extrajudicial killing as a
fundamental tenet of human rights. Criminals, terrorists, and gang members must be properly arrested, tried, and convicted of a capital offense before they can be put to death On these grounds, organizations like...

People Muse On What They Consider Indescribable Pain "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

It swallows me.

Can confirm losing a child is the most excruciating experience of ones life. Ive lost a husband (car accident) and then a child (leukemia). Its all a mindfuck and has consumed my life.

I try to function best I can but I dont see the world like a lot of people and grief has just been my norm for 19 years now. The pain and hurt is so much that if I think about it too much, it swallows me.

U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman Sends Letter To SEC Chair Calling Attention To Grayscale Bitcoin Trust Situation "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

U.S. Congressman Brad Sherman has sent a letter to Gary Gensler, Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), regarding the situation of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC).

According to Sherman, as many as 850,000 retail investors, including some who used individual retirement account funds, are currently trapped in their GBTC investments due to the actions of GBTC and its parent company, Digital Currency Group (DCG). Sherman estimates that these investors' retirement security and in some cases, their life savings, may be at risk and that if the situation is not remedied, they could lose tens of billions of dollars of their savings.

Sherman's concerns regarding GBTC stem from the fact that GBTC shares currently trade at a ~42% discount to the bitcoins in the trust, and Grayscale has refused to redeem GBTC shares, citing Regulation M's prohibition on simultaneous sales and redemptions of the same security. Grayscale's Head of Investor Relations, Rayhanch Sharif-Askary, admitted that the company's flooding of the market with GBTC by continuously issuing new shares between 2018 and 2021 drove the discount to its net asset value.

Sherman alleges that Grayscale's actions are motivated by a desire to increase assets under management, regardless of the impact on GBTC's retail investors. Grayscale charges users an annual 2% fee based on the actual value of bitcoin, not the value of the GBTC that investors own. By charging more than four times what their competitors charge, Grayscale was able to bring in $615 million in fees alone in 2021, according to the letter.

Sherman has posed several questions to the SEC related to this matter, including whether Regulation M is a barrier to allowing shareholder redemptions today, whether the SEC is aware of other specific rules and regulations that are a barrier to allowing shareholder redemptions today, and whether it is a matter of concern that Grayscale does not have a single independent director on either its board of directors or audit committee.

In conclusion, Congressman Brad Sherman's letter to the SEC Chair, Gary Gensler, is raising concerns over the situation of Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC). Sherman is worried that as many as 850,000 retail investors could lose their re...

The Reviews Review: Don Carlo and the Abuse of Power "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Cardinal Fernando Nio de Guevara, El Greco. Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

Don Carlo is the kind of opera that has gone out of fashion. I cruised through half-empty rows when I saw it last fall, just days after attending a packed-to-vibrating weeknight production of The Hours , the two-act opera adaptation of a 1998 novel and its 2002 film adaptation promoted heavily on the subway and. Verdis four-hour-long political tragedy, set during the Spanish Inquisition in the sixteenth century, feels more like eating your operatic vegetables. Its place in the canon was actually secured by the Met, whose onetime general manager Rudolf Bing fished it out to open the 1950 season.

Based largely on a historical play by Friedrich Schiller, Don Carlo imagines a backstory to some real events in the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias, who was briefly engaged to Elisabeth of Valois before she instead married his father, King Philip II of Spain. Schiller invented an anachronistic friend for Carlos: Rodrigo, Marquis of Posa, who distracts the heartsick prince with the political cause of Flemish independence. Meanwhile, Philip, bitter and paranoid over his loveless marriage, contemplates getting rid of his son and his treacherous friend with counsel from the blind and ruthless leader of the Inquisition.

Among the works Shakespearean qualitiesAnglophone audiences might especially recall Hamletis the fact that there are multiple versions of it, in both French and Italian. Verdi revised it several times between 1866...

Dilapidated Mom-and-Pop Shops Stand Alone in the Scottish Highlands in New Paintings by Andrew McIntosh "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

In DreamersAndrew McIntosh simultaneously conveys the plight and resilience of small businesses, rendering lone shops and inns among desolate landscapes. The Scottish artist (previously) often taps into nostalgia and the forgotten, and hes known for using the highlands of his childhood as a backdrop for his mysterious scenes in oil paint.

This new body of work, which is on view this month at James Freeman Gallery, pits the inhospitable landscape against the needs of commerce with a heavy dose of irony. A travel agency towers above a small island requiring a trip by boat to reach, a tanning salon glows amid a foggy forest, and a lawnmower repair shop stands amid an overgrown field. Often outfitting the buildings with flaking paint, neon signs, and graffiti, McIntosh positions each as a relic of a former era, positing that like the Romantic notions of a wild, untamable nature becoming outmoded, so is the postwar idealism of capitalism and enterprise.

Why Experts Are Suddenly Freaking OUT About AI | Tristan Harris | The Glenn Beck Podcast | Ep 185 "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

To his surprise, Glenn has found that many artificial intelligence experts would rather play politics than warn the world about whats coming. AI is this generations atom bomb, but experts like Google alumnus Geoffrey Hinton have refused to speak with Glenn. But in this episode, Glenn speaks with one of the few who will. As the co-founder and executive director of the Center for Humane Technology, Tristan Harris has devoted himself to warning us about the dangers of AI. The Atlantic described him as the closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience, and his Netflix Original docuseries, The Social Dilemma, documents the devastating power of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. But AI, he predicts, will be even more disruptive. Tristan tells Glenn about what the future of AI can easily look like if it isnt reined in now: more Chinese infiltration, a rise in teenage suicide, and a creepy Big Tech race toward AI intimacy with humans. But is government regulation the best solution? As Tristan points out, this question needs to be answered right now by ALL of us. More and more often, artificial intelligences are developing minds of their own with frighteningly god-like intelligence and power. Tristan describes this as summoning the demon, asking Glenn why we should let five people in Silicon Valley decide for the rest of humanity. If were not careful, Tristan tells Glenn, this could be the final test of our species.

How Elon Musk is using Twitter to SAVE FREEDOM in America "IndyWatch Feed Survival"

Tucker Carlsons latest move is a brilliant one, Glenn says. Hes taking his show to a platform where it cant be controlled by executives or government elite: Twitter. Thanks to Elon Musk, Glenn explains, Twitter is not only becoming an actual town square, but its becoming the ONLY social media platform on which Americans can freely express opinions and ideas WITHOUT the fear of censorship. Musk and Glenn likely dont agree on a lot. But as long as hes a supporter of free speech and our First Amendment rights, Glenn says, then I see us all as a team. In this clip, Glenn further discusses how Elon Musk and Twitter are working to save freedom in America, and he urges YOU to become involved today.

Is Pepe Coin Ready For Another Pump? Heres What On-Chain Data Says "IndyWatch Feed Crypto"

Heres what the different on-chain indicators from Santiment have to say about whether Pepe Coin could see another pump soon or not.

The Memecoins On-Chain Metrics Have Been Down Since The Top

PEPE has been one of the hottest topics around the cryptocurrency market recently, thanks to the explosive growth that the meme coin has enjoyed. Between the end of last month and the 5th of May, the coin saw its price rise by an extraordinary 1,200%.

The uptrend, however, ended there and the cryptocurrency has been sharply plunging since then. According to Santiment, the on-chain analytics firms social dominance indicator signaled this top in advance.

Social dominance tells us what percentage of the discussions happening on social media related to the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap are talking about a given coin.

As the below chart shows, Pepes social dominance rose to very high values just before the top took form earlier in the month.

Pepe Coin Social Dominance

Whenever social dominance hits high levels, its a sign of euphoria among investors, which is something that has historically led to top formations for cryptocurrencies.

Santiment notes that the indicator still has a value of about 5%, meaning that 5% of all discussions related to the top 100 assets involve the meme coin currently.

Seeing it get down to the 1-2% range would be a good sign that traders are beginning to stray away and look for pumps from other altcoins, the firm explains.

The active addresses metric, which measures the total number of unique addresses taking part in some transaction activity on the blockchain, also saw a spike just before the top.

Pepe Active Addresses

When this indicator has a high value, it means a large number of investors are making trades right now. The price generally becomes more likely to get volatile when the metric shows such a trend.

From the chart, its visi...

Online Archive Provides Free Coloring Book Pages From Over 100 Libraries and Museums

Free Coloring Book Pages by Color Our Collections

If you're ever looking for a way to relax, coloring is considered one of the best methods. While most of us remember filling in coloring books as children, this is a hobby you can continue into adulthood as well. Color Our Collections is offering more opportunities to use your colored pencils and other art supplies. Since 2016, this campaign initiated by The New York Academy of Medicine Library collects coloring pages from over 100 cultural institutions from across the globe and makes them free to download online.

The illustrations from Color Our Collections differ from books you would ordinarily buy in the store. Ranging from floral drawings to depictions of fairies, these designs are rich in history. Some are plucked from vintage advertising, while others are acquired from old novels. Since most of these artworks were not meant to be colored in, they offer a fun challenge for those up to the task.

While some of these pieces feature plenty of space to layer different shades, others require a bit more creative thinking. But the best part of participating in the campaign is getting a chance to explore some of the old artwork from these museums and libraries by bringing them to life in color.

Scroll down to see more coloring pages from the 2023 campaign, and check out all of the available art via Color Our Collections website.

The Reviews Review: Emma Bovary at the Opera "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Lucie de Lammermoore. Victor Coindre, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons.

My first memory of opera is Bugs Bunny or maybe The Pink Panther Show: those Saturday-morning cartoons where the fat lady sings and shatters a glass. Much later I began to date a man who had been to hundreds of opera performances (a fact I found not only shocking but literally unbelievable) and so I went from watching no operas to almost one a month. The one Ive enjoyed the most by far was the Mets spring 2022 production of Gaetano Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor, staged in a town in the depressed Rust Belt. I had already read about Lucia: its the opera that inspires Emma Bovary to cheat on her husband (again, and more dramatically). And yet I didnt know anything about its plot, because Flaubert doesnt describe it; the opera serves merely to connect Emma to her younger self, the pretty country girl who had had bigger dreams than a failure of a husband and a cad of an (ex-)lover. At the opera, Flaubert writes, dinsaissibles penses come over her: elusive thoughts, uncapturable thoughts, incomprehensible thoughts. Whats coming over her is fantasy.

Nabokov said about Emma Bovary that she was the quintessential bad reader, the one who reads emotionally, in a shallow juvenile manner, putting herself in this or that female characters place: above all, in the place of Lucia di Lammermoor, the tragic sister of a warlord, kept from the man she loves, who slaughters her husband on their wedding night in a crazed delirium and herself dies. But to read Madame Bovary as purely reprobative seems to me cold to the point of insanity; as Flaub...

Frenzied Emotions Swirl Through Changyu Zous Poetry-Inspired Illustrations "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

A figure is surrounded by a chaotic cluster of birds, cars, houses, and other symbols

Starry Bird 7. All images Changyu Zou, shared with permission

Tinged with magic and metaphor, the energetic illustrations by Savannah-based Chinese artist Changyu Zou are emotionally candid and reflect her reactions to verse. I think poetry uses the most beautiful words to express whats most real in the poets heart. Although these words sometimes are very abstract and not easy to understand, they can give me unlimited imagination, she says, sharing that she tends to pull a few terms or phrases from a poem and then use those as the basis for her drawings.

Zou strives for an interplay between the original text and her visual language, which often relies on a feverish mishmash of figures and symbols. The mixed-media illustrationsshe works with both digital and analog materials, including gouache, acrylics, crayons, colored pencils, and sometimes collaged detailsdraw directly from the Misty Poets, a tradition that emerged in defiance of the restrictive Cultural Revolution of 20th-century China and is characterized by its obscure haziness. This mysterious and indeterminate quality arises in Zous works as birds, human hands, cars, houses, and other objects appear to whirl in chaotic motion.

In addition to the Misty Poets, the illustrator mentions Kahlil Gibran, Haizi, and Rabindranath Tagore as influences. One line of Tagores Starry Bird reads light in my heart the evening star of rest and then let the night whisper to me of love and inspired Zous series by the same name. Faust and the Risk of Desire "IndyWatch Feed Literature"

Faust and Mephistopheles. Painting by Anton Kaulbach, courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.

I first discovered opera in 1991, when my tenth-grade English teacher killed a couple of class periods by showing the movie Amadeus. The bits it contained of The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni were seductive enough to send me to the nearest outpost of the Wherehouse, a California record-store chain, where the classical and opera section was an afterthought. When I compare it to the contemporary infinity of Spotify, however, the limited selection now seems a kind of blessing: with so little to choose from, it was impossible to feel overwhelmed.

It was also an advantage not to have anyone telling me which operas were great and which were pass. Not until much later, for instance, would I learn that by the nineties, Gounods Faust was already a century past its prime. It debuted in Paris in 1859 and quickly became a worldwide hit, especially in the U.S., where it was chosen to inaugurate the newly founded Metropolitan Opera in 1883. But in time, Fausts blockbuster status made it a byword for middlebrow entertainment, a bit like The Phantom of the Opera today. When Edith Wharton set the first chapter of The Age of Innocence at a performance of Faust, it was a way of critiquing the provincialism of 1870s New York from the vantage point of 1920. For instance, Wharton pokes fun at the fact that the opera, originally written in French, is sung in Italian, the language Americans were used to hearing in the opera house at the time.

The novel opens with the main characters watching the passionate love duet at the end of act 3, in which Marguerite, a virtuous young woman, is seduced by Faust, a middle-aged scholar who has sold his soul to the devil. As he begs to caress your beauty, she plays a game of he loves me, he loves me not, picking petals off a flower. It is a sign of Marguerites childlike innocence but also of...

5,400-Year-Old Great Grandfather Cypress Tree May Be Oldest in World "IndyWatch Feed Arts"

5,400-Year-Old Great Grandfather Cypress Tree May Be Oldest in World

Embed from Getty Images

Trees are living history. These witnesses to time include an ancient olive tree at Vouves on the island of Crete which watched empires rise and fall, and Methuselah the twisted 4,800-year-old California bristlecone pine whose seed sprouted before the construction of the Egyptian pyramids. Now, scientists have discovered a Patagonia cypress tree in Chile known as Great Grandfather or Alerce Milenario is even older. Recent analysis of a segment of tree rings shows the giant is an estimated 5,484 years oldlikely taking the award for oldest living tree.

Deep in the Chilean forest about 500 miles south of Santiago, the cypress tree stands amid dense foliage, sheltered from the elements in a ravine. A member of the Fitzroya cupressoides species, the magnificent tree is 13 feet in diameter and 92 feet tall. Moss flourishes on its surface and smaller trees have even taken root in its cracks. It's a survivor, there are no others that have had the opportunity to live so long, Antonio Lara of Austral University and Chile's center for climate science and resilience, noted to AFP. With her colleague Jonathan Barichivich of the Parisian Climate and Environmental Science Laboratory, she took a sample of the core (interior wood) of the tree using a thin borer to not harm the ancient creature.

The team counted 2,400 growth rings in the section of core. However, they were not even able to reach the center of the enormous tree. Therefore, they turned to a computer model to complete the ring count. By comparing to other alerce trees and taking into account what they know about variables affecting tree growth, they came to an 80% confidence estimate that Great Grandfather is over 5,000 years old. This makes him older than Methuselah, the former record holder. This discovery is exciting, as ancient trees contain a lot of records of climate change over he millenn...
